Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Phlebotomist is an integral part of the patient care team, providing prompt, courteous, and customer-focused service to patients, visitors, and interdisciplinary departments. The Phlebotomist is primarily responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures for testing and diagnostic purposes, while demonstrating knowledge of the organization's service standards and incorporating them into their duties.
FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Identifies patients using 2 patient identifiers and confirms information on specimen labels before performing venipuncture procedures; notifies nursing staff and supervisor of identification discrepancies immediately.
  2. Introduces self, explains the nature of the procedure, and provides instructions to patients.
  3. Assesses patients' limitations and observes restrictions in place.
  4. Obtains venipuncture specimens following the order of draw, labels all tubes at the patient's bedside, and delivers samples to the appropriate lab promptly.
  5. Monitors patient status and ensures patient safety throughout procedures; reports any changes in patient's condition to the Staff Nurse (e.g., signs of vertigo/imminent syncope such as pallor, perspiration, lightheadedness, hyperventilation, nausea, facial droop, slurred speech, clutching of the chest).
  6. Ensures patient confidentiality and privacy at all times; uses discretion when discussing confidential matters.
  7. Documents completed and unable specimens efficiently and in real-time within the EMR (Rover).
  8. Effectively communicates with nursing staff and providers through EPIC secure chat in real-time.
  9. Collaborates with staff members to perform patient refusals or instances where specimen collection is not possible.
  10. Performs clerical tasks supporting the Phlebotomy Department, including promptly answering and responding to calls; escalates issues to the supervisor as needed.
  11. Maintains the blood culture pager throughout the shift and responds to it appropriately.
  12. Follows operational SOPs for Specimen Collection, Handling of Blood Cultures, and Phlebotomy Procedures.
  13. Performs pediatric labs in a timely manner and adheres to operational SOPs for pediatric skin puncture and specimen collection.
  14. Performs other duties as delegated by the ADON/ADN/CM.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or,
2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and,
3. Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
