A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PLUMBING/HVAC ESTIMATOR
As a Plumbing/HVAC Estimator, you are invaluable to our company. With a good understanding of the true scope of each project, you research the materials needed and bid jobs in order to be competitive while still keeping strong profit margins. You provide technical support to the sales team throughout the pre-sales and pre-construction process. This includes job walks, budgeting, estimating, project schedule preparation, value-added analysis, and regulatory compliance for all types of construction involving mechanical contracting, including new work and system retrofits of plumbing & HVAC piping, sheet metal work, and sprinkler systems.
With careful attention to detail, you research the cost of materials. Using that information, you estimate project costs and timelines. In order to effectively communicate our budget assumptions to the client, you are always sure to compile thorough and detailed lists of qualifications, clarifications, and exclusions You understand and contribute to risk and contingency assessments. In a timely manner, you complete and submit completed bids for new business. But it doesn't end there. If we don't win the bid, you always follow up to find out why so you can continue to hone your skills.
If we do win, you schedule and run a turnover conference promptly upon award. You review the plans with the job foreman so that the project will be completed within the defined budgets and time schedules. To adhere to labor budgets and project milestones, you help control the field labor. You also review vendor and subcontractor submittals to ensure adherence to the project specifications. Making sure to obtain all justifiable change orders, you keep track of any changes in scope and delays caused by others. You get great satisfaction out of ensuring that we continue to win jobs as well as delivering them on-time, within the scope, and on-budget!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A PLUMBING/HVAC ESTIMATOR
  • Specific plumbing or HVAC trade experience
  • Ability to prepare a procurement plan for buying out the vendors and subcontractors
  • Ability to review plans and specifications and provide value engineering for mechanical systems
  • Ability to develop bid strategies
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong sales and relationship-building skills

WORK SCHEDULE
