Description of Work

This is a full-time staff attorney position in the Office of the Vice President & General Counsel of the University of Nebraska. The Office is responsible for all legal matters affecting the University and provides legal services to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors, administrative officers, and others on the four campuses of the University system.

This position is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the University of Nebraska Office of the President on the East Campus, with occasional travel to other campuses. Duties will involve performance of general legal services for the University under the direction of the Vice President & General Counsel, with an emphasis on employment law and faculty and student matters. The successful candidate will provide counsel and support to all campuses and the Office of the President on faculty and staff employment issues, guidance under University policies, student conduct, accommodations, and other assigned duties. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials, plus benefits. A criminal background check is required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
B.A. / B.S. plus an earned J.D. degree from an accredited law school and a minimum of five years of related legal practice. Member in good standing of the State Bar of Nebraska, or permitted to be admitted in Nebraska under Nebraska Court Rule section 3-119 as a Class 1-B applicant within one year following the hiring date. Expertise or experience in Title VII, Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, faculty tenure, and employee hiring and separations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience at another institution of higher education, public employer, non-profit entity, or law firm, specifically in the areas of practice identified above.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate a high level of attention to detail, excellent independent judgment and decision-making skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, problem anticipation, timely project completion, effective organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple priorities, and a keen ability to summarize and explain legal complexities.
