Are you seeking a rewarding career opportunity where you can make a meaningful impact in the lives of others and shape the future of your community? The City of Champaign is seeking an experienced, community-focused, and proven leader to serve as its next Deputy City Manager.

The next Deputy City Manager will work as part of a leadership team that provides direction to the highly talented group of public servants who take care of our City. In collaboration with the City Manager, two Deputy City Managers help lead the City organization in executing the City Council’s vision for our community. We aspire to excellence because we know that members of our community rely upon us every day.

Illustrative examples of work performed by the Deputy City Manager:

  1. Collaborates with the City Manager to develop and implement policies, programs, and initiatives to advance the City Council’s strategic vision for the City.
  2. Provides oversight and guidance to department heads in the execution of their duties, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and compliance with performance standards.
  3. Assists the City Manager in coordinating and/or negotiating cooperative agreements among governments, community agencies, and private businesses.
  4. May be appointed to serve as Deputy Liquor Commissioner on behalf of the Mayor, coordinating the team of staff responsible for liquor licensing, code compliance, and support for businesses with liquor licenses in the City.
  5. Meets and corresponds with various governmental officials, professional and business organizations, and members of the community to answer questions, resolve problems, and establish partnerships to advance City goals.
  6. Serves as a sounding board for the City Manager; provides candid feedback to the City Manager on matters related to City operations, organizational culture, and service delivery.

Minimum qualifications for this position:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public or business administration, public policy, or closely related field.
  2. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a comparably sized municipal, State, or Federal organization, at least five of which must be in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
  3. Experience working in multi-racial, multi-cultural urban communities with demonstrated success in serving a diverse population.
  4. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.

Preferred qualifications for the position:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in public or business administration, public policy, or closely related field.
  2. Completion of local government leadership training, including programs offered through the International City/County Managers Association or similar programs offered by State or nonprofit organizations.
  3. Certification or certificate of completed training, or professional development in racial or multicultural studies; diversity, equity, and inclusion; or similar area of study.
  4. Two or more years of leading municipal functions in a comparably sized organization at the level of department head, assistant/deputy manager or administrator, or chief operating officer.
  5. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the preferred knowledge, skills and abilities for the position will be considered.

The salary range is $154,035.96 - $207,952.42 with the starting salary depending on the individual’s qualifications. Residency within the City limits is required within six months of appointment. Position open until filled.
