The Vice President – Property Accounting will oversee the Property Accounting Department and provide technical and operational leadership across all property accounting functions. This leader will be keenly focused on providing oversight and efficiencies that will help to position American Campus Communities (ACC) for scalability and growth. This position will work closely with internal departments to include, but not limited to: Property Operations, Business Operations, Asset Management, Tax, Financial Planning & Analysis, Corporate Accounting, etc.


Critical Duties:

  • Align and drive efficiencies across the property accounting team and the organization to maximize Company performance and pursue achievement of long-term goals, profitability, and growth.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Company’s property accounting functions including, but not limited to: monthly financial close, property-level financial reporting processes for the Company’s portfolio of properties, regularly communicating and reporting results to internal leadership and external stakeholders as needed and/or requested.
  • Ensure the Property Accounting Team follows the Company’s internal control and property specific audit processes and reporting, and assist department leadership in ensuring internal controls and audit processes are continuously updated to reflect changes in business processes and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Property Accounting, and support senior leadership in the implementation of the Company’s technology roadmap, including a Property Leasing & Management System and a cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
  • Coordinate with senior and executive leadership on large and complex transactions to include, but not limited to: acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures; reviewing legal agreements, providing feedback as it relates to property accounting processes and reporting requirements, advising management and owner representatives on property accounting and due diligence considerations.


Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Support senior leadership in strategic staffing of the Property Accounting Team designed to meet the current and future needs of the organization with a focus on scalability.
  • Collaborate closely with the Corporate Accounting team to ensure efficient execution of multiple annual external audits.
  • Support and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders across the organization as needed and/or requested to ensure those teams have the information necessary to successfully complete their duties.
  • Serve as a key leader and stakeholder for the Accounting department in organizational priorities and strategic initiatives that will support the Company’s future growth and ability to efficiently scale.
  • Maintain and utilize strong working knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to accounting systems, processes, reporting practices to lead day-to-day department operations.


Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • Carries out supervisor responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Coach, train and develop a team while managing the workflow and prioritization of projects and ensuring on-time execution and completion.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise


Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and/or Finance, and/or 10+ years’ experience in accounting and/or financial operations.
  • 3+ years in a leadership role overseeing a large team.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) experience, including performing due diligence and post-close integration.
  • Experience within the Real Estate sector is preferred.

Certificates/Licenses:

  • CPA preferred.
