A Lead Machinist is a senior-level position that combines advanced machining skills with leadership and supervisory responsibilities. This role involves overseeing the work of other machinists, ensuring that production schedules are met, and maintaining the quality of machined parts.
JOB SUMMARY & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Summary:
The Lead Machinist is responsible for leading and coordinating the activities of a team of machinists to ensure efficient production of high-quality parts. This position involves overseeing machining operations, providing technical guidance, setting up and operating advanced machines, and ensuring that safety and quality standards are met. The Lead Machinist serves as the primary point of contact between the machining team and management, playing a key role in optimizing production processes and mentoring less-experienced machinists.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Team Coordination: In conjunction with management, coordinate the activities of a team of machinists, including assigning tasks, setting priorities, and monitoring progress to ensure that production schedules are met.
  • Advanced Machining: Set up and operate complex manual and CNC machines, including multi-axis lathes, mills, and grinders, to produce precision parts with tight tolerances. Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics; superior Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (GD&T) knowledge.
  • Quality Assurance: Oversee quality control processes, ensuring that all machined parts meet stringent specifications and industry standards. Conduct line-level inspections using precision measuring instruments and oversee the inspection work of other machinists. Works with QA department to meet all guidelines.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior and intermediate machinists, helping them develop their skills and advance in their careers.
  • Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, and increase efficiency. Work with engineering and production teams to implement process improvements and troubleshoot issues.
  • CNC Programming: Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs for complex parts, ensuring that machining operations are efficient and accurate. Experience with software such as: G-code, M-code, SolidCAM, MasterCAM, Swiss-ISO, TISIS, Esprit, and similar.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure that all machining operations are performed in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Conduct safety training and enforce safe work practices among the team.
  • Maintenance Oversight: Supervise routine maintenance and troubleshooting of machining equipment, ensuring that machines are in good working condition and minimizing downtime.
  • Communication: Act as the primary liaison between the machining team and management, providing regular updates on production status, challenges, and achievements.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of machining operations, production data, CNC programs, and maintenance activities. Ensure that all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Other : Participate in R&D, product design projects, new products and procedures as needed.
    • All other duties as needed to assist the company in attaining its objectives.
    • Must be able to work overtime when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal apprenticeship or technical training program is preferred.
  • Experience: Typically requires 7+ years of experience in machining, with extensive experience in both manual and CNC operations. Previous lead or senior level experience is strongly preferred. CNC Swiss Lathe experience preferred.
  • Skills :
    • Mastery of machining techniques, including advanced manual and CNC operations.
    • Strong leadership and team management skills.
    • Proficiency in CNC programming and experience with CAD/CAM software.
    • Excellent understanding of quality control processes and the ability to conduct detailed inspections.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex machining issues.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
    • Ability to write and read English.
    • Maintains appropriate confidentiality of information.
    • Have a positive attitude and the ability to foster a positive work environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and good eyesight for working with detailed components.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, often up to 50 pounds or more.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Works in a machine shop environment, which may involve exposure to loud noise, metal shavings, and various cutting fluids and lubricants.
  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, composite toe shoes, gloves, and ear protection.
