The College of Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence to join their team.

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for leading the college’s ongoing efforts to become an accessible, welcoming, and inclusive community. This position will leverage its subject matter expertise to lead and develop best practices and guidelines that strengthen the College’s goals around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence is expected to work collaboratively and will report to the Frank & Julie Jungers Dean of Engineering and is a member of the Dean’s leadership team.

In collaboration with the Dean and other campus/college leaders, this position will provide professional expertise and lead, develop, and implement programs that increase the participation and engagement of diverse and underrepresented groups across the College. The position is responsible for overseeing matters involving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as advancing and sustaining inclusive environments for all students, faculty, and staff across the College. This position is expected to impact all aspects of work, for example, leading efforts to attract and retain underrepresented populations at all levels and ranks.

In serving the CoE community, the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence joins the College of Engineering Dean’s Office in promoting and continually aspiring to excellence, collaboration, integrity, respect, cultural competency, and inclusivity.

The Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence will play a key role in the preparation, coordination, and oversight of the College’s plan to develop resources and provide training to support CoE’s units in inclusive excellence and compliance; participate and represent CoE on various related committees and workgroups; and provide communication on CoE’s efforts.

The Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence should have considerable experience with implementing inclusive excellence initiatives, data analysis, compliance, and project management, preferably within higher education.

This position is expected to work with faculty leadership in developing and writing effective proposals for support, including federal, foundations, donors, etc. This position is expected to prioritize limited resources to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and staff.

This position must be able to work independently on certain assignments and manage day-to-day administrative operations, including operational costs, salaries, fiscal reports, and record documentation. This position must be able to build relationships across other units, reducing barriers and silos across units.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Consulting, Training, and Compliance (40%)
  2. Serve as a strategic leader and subject matter expert, creating and cultivating a common vision of the College’s commitment to inclusive excellence that can be shared amongst students, faculty, and staff as well as College external constituents.
  3. Develop, plan, and deliver communication and training/education/workshops to the CoE community around inclusive excellence and related subject matter; coordinate meetings with CoE leadership and administrators to deliver and discuss data and associated strategies to address any possible areas of under-utilization in the College’s strategic plan, ensure that data and performance measures are easily accessible and shared amongst the broader community.
  4. Manage inclusive excellence initiatives to recruit and retain a world-class community of faculty and staff and promote inclusivity; Work collaboratively to improve processes and procedures that ensure the inclusion and voice of students; as appropriate, collaborate with existing campus resources including ADVANCE, CoE HR, and the Office of Faculty Advancement.
  5. Provide pathways for student advocacy on diversity issues and enhance the overall CoE experience.
  6. Perform regular review of the CoE website as it pertains to EOAA; update and maintain content as appropriate and ensure alignment with UW EOAA office.
  7. Provide updates to the Dean, Associate Deans, and senior leaders regarding diversity and inclusion efforts.
  8. Support local units and centers so that they are informed and empowered to make thoughtful and strategic decisions that are in support of the College’s equity, inclusion, and diversity goals.
  9. Collaborate with internal departments (i.e., Academic Services, Infrastructure, Finance, Human Resources, Advancement, etc.) to promote inclusive excellence initiatives to students, faculty, and staff.
  10. Coordinate with relevant offices to seek opportunities to reduce disparities including making recommendations for changes to policies within the CoE community.
  11. Collaborate with the Dean, Vice Dean and Associate Deans, Department Chairs, campus leaders, University committees, students, faculty and staff, and external constituents to advance the College’s commitment to all aspects of inclusivity that are essential to academic excellence.
  12. Working in close partnership with Human Resources, escalate issues and concerns to CoE HR and executive leadership.

Analysis (15%)

  1. Collaborate with College leadership and Dean’s Office staff to develop and collect performance measurement goals as related to inclusive excellence, work to ensure that metrics are accessible, and lead to accountability.
  2. Partner with CoE Institutional Research to design and implement mechanisms for assessment and improvement of related initiatives. Use surveys, benchmarking, data, and assessments to set and inform inclusive excellence goals related to matters of student access, progression, retention, and completion.
  3. Work with CoE Human Resources, Office of Academic Personnel, ADVANCE, and CoE Administration to gather, review, analyze, prepare, and disseminate data as needed or as requested by hiring units in accordance with project timelines, university policy standards, and/or applicable Federal and State regulations.
  4. Effectively leverage existing reports and participate in the development of new reports to support data needs.

Engagement (15%)

  1. Collaborate with partner organizations’ diversity councils, and serve as expert on various committees and teams, both internal and external to the CoE. Engage with registered student organizations, including but not limited to NSBE, SWE, SHPE, WiSE, and AISES.
  2. Partner with the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity to ensure that the College’s work is in line with the university’s diversity blueprint.
  3. Coordinate and manage affinity groups with the College of Engineering. Lead recurring stakeholder meetings, including the CoE Diversity Committee. Work specifically in support of registered student organizations including NSBE, SWE, SHPE, etc.
  4. Working collaboratively with COE leadership and the Advancement team, develop and participate in fundraising efforts for programs that are in support of the College’s mission of inclusive excellence. Prioritize funding for student programming and initiatives that promote outreach of prospective students from underserved backgrounds. Build new and strengthen existing K-12 and Community College relationships through outreach.
  5. Partnering with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, work with the STARS program to ensure that underrepresented undergraduate populations continue to be served in a manner that is representative of the College’s values.

Proposal Writing (10%)

  1. Position is expected to write effective proposals for support (Federal, foundations, donors, etc.).
  2. Develop new and compelling ideas in a collaborative manner working with both internal and external constituents.
  3. Position is expected to be well connected with the national STEM diversity community, and potentially serve on review panels, national meetings, reviewing other proposals, etc.

Administrative Leadership (10%)

  1. Position is expected to serve as a leader in the College of Engineering, promoting collaboration across all units within the College and greater Campus.
  2. Position is expected to proactively work with administrative units within the College and Campus (Human Resources, Finance, Advancement, Facilities, Computing Services, Academic Affairs, Admissions) in a manner that is both collegial and compliant with the policies and procedures of the College of Engineering and University of Washington.
  3. Recommend and implement change in a manner that is inclusive of constituents as well as existing governance and administrative policies.
  4. Position is expected to reduce barriers and silos while working in a transparent and collaborative manner.

Direct Supervision (10%)

  1. Supervise the work completed by direct reports, ensuring they have the depth and breadth of knowledge to be successful in their role. Provide ongoing constructive feedback to support their success; and provide leadership that reflects the College’s and University’s values, policies & procedures.
  2. Provide guidance to direct reports on requirements and/or opportunities for learning and professional development.
  3. If direct reports have unscheduled absences, promptly develop a temporary coverage schedule for the period of absence. Ensure all staff who provide coverage are appropriately informed and trained.

Lead Responsibilities

  1. Inclusive excellence initiatives and programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  1. Supervise the Director of Engineering Excellence, Manager of Inclusive Excellence, Manager of Programs for Inclusive Excellence (PIE), and the Director of the Washington State Academic RedShirt program (STARS).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Master's degree in Education, Business Organizational Behavior, Sociology, Data Management, Instructional Design, or related field.
  2. Minimum of seven years of experience in implementing inclusive excellence programs, information management, compliance, or related work.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Demonstrated experience in supervising staff and promoting training and professional development.
  2. Experience and proficiency in preparing, managing, and overseeing an inclusive excellence plan.
  3. Successful candidate must be an excellent writer and must have analytical and quantitative experience working in higher education or related field.
  4. Demonstrated analytical and quantitative writing ability, strong preference given to candidates with proposal writing experience.
  5. Candidate will have a proven track record of successful proposal writing (and related project development).
  6. Demonstrated commitment to promoting cultural competency and universal accessibility, as well as serving diverse populations/communities representing a range of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and/or ethnic backgrounds.
  7. Ability to be strategic, visionary, transformative, and tactical while paying close attention to delivering tangible results.
  8. Demonstrated successful history of collaborative leadership skills with proven ability to work effectively and respectfully across institutional and organizational lines to build consensus and forge strong collaborative relationships with a diverse array of campus constituencies in a complex and higher education environment.
  9. Ability to exercise a high-degree of professionalism, integrity, and ownership; must be results-oriented, innovative, creative, highly-motivated, team-oriented and a self-starter.
  10. Project management and problem-solving skills, ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  11. Ability to maintain discretion and tact when handling complex issues and data; ability to exercise discretion with sensitive issues.
  12. Demonstrated proficiency with producing complex institutional reports (data and written), and navigating data, analytics, and/or related information management software.
  13. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  14. Ability to monitor, comprehend, adhere to and implement relevant Federal, State, and local laws/regulations.
  15. Ability to adapt to current and evolving technology and software to accomplish daily activities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. PhD or EdDoc in education, business organizational behavior, sociology, data management, instructional design, or related field; and a minimum of seven years of experience in implementing inclusive excellence programs, information management, compliance, or related work.
  2. Advanced proficiency with information management, statistical reporting, and/or data gathering.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collective bargaining and shared governance environment.
  4. Relevant experience in a higher education or large public institution setting.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
