Position Summary: Shop Managers are responsible for the supervision of all shop employees, safety, shop culture, employee morale, and retention as delivered by the team of technicians and support personnel under their management. An ideal employee will recognize that decisions made affect others and will seek to make them with as much information as possible, and hold themselves and others accountable for decisions and behaviors within their span of control. This position reports to the Director of Equipment and is the highest-ranking regional shop employee.

Duties:

  • Responsible for the preventative maintenance programs, repair, and job readiness of mobile and stationary equipment to support field operations.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of service operations, managing the overall performance of all areas of the regional service operation including P&L, equipment, personnel administration, and work schedules.
  • Participate in the equipment evaluation process to determine buy/sell needs.
  • Ensure work orders are in accordance with company policy to be billed back to the job or equipment.
  • Calculate a billable labor rate structure to encompass expenses related to the repair labor and shop equipment used for the repair expectations and use an electronic time program to track logged repair time to a work order.
  • Hold shop personnel accountable for completing work within the established time and quality.
  • Ensure all personnel maintain a safe and clean workspace, providing timely, specific feedback on performance, safety, workspace, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, condition, and safety of the shop and equipment yard, reporting any major issues or improvement needs to the Equipment Director.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct all equipment maintenance at the maintenance facility, including preventive maintenance and repair programs, equipment safety programs, and tracking of all expenditures.
  • Act as a technical advisor on all equipment issues and assist the Equipment Director with equipment budgets, potential equipment purchases, and management of agreements and contracts.
  • Ensure PMs are scheduled and performed according to documented procedures, overseeing that the prescribed records are updated and maintained in the software system.
  • Minimize equipment downtime by utilizing in-house technicians and outside shops, effectively scheduling, planning, and assigning workload to various shops and vendors.
  • Coordinate shop employees to support other departments.
  • Responsible for all repairs or replacement of tools and parts.
  • Decide when repairs should be outsourced and communicate with vendors concerning cost, schedule, changes, and completion dates for repairs.
  • Communicate regularly with management by providing cost estimates, repair status, and completion dates.
  • Review for approval all equipment-related invoices and work directly with vendors to resolve billing errors and/or warranty claims.
  • Maintain knowledge and records of equipment present at the location, including condition, repair status, and readiness of each piece.
  • Oversee the weekly open work order report to ensure all PMs are performed in a timely manner and that all electronic work order documentation, purchase orders, timekeeping, telematics, and parts and inventory controls are properly maintained.
  • Remain current on industry standards, innovations, materials, tools, and processes to ensure the operational readiness of the shop as well as the security of the equipment, shop, and personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or additional equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of shop/equipment maintenance facility management or related fields.
  • Expertise in equipment tracking, maintenance schedules, inspection, and insurance requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of FMSCA/DOT, IFDA, etc. regulations and compliance.
  • Must be a self-motivated independent worker who is honest and ethical in their professional work and relationships, trustworthy, reliable, and dependable.
  • Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills, knowledgeable and experienced in heavy diesel repair.
  • Highly motivated, energetic, and professionally assertive.
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Results-oriented.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, able to identify hidden problems and look beyond the obvious for answers.
