About the NIHCS Facility
VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (NIHCS) was formed in 1995 by the integration of the VA Medical Centers in Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana. The mission of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System is to provide coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health services and extended care to veterans in a timely, accessible and cost-effective manner. The Fort Wayne Campus offers primary and secondary medical and surgical services, and the Marion Campus offers a full range of psychiatry services, nursing home care, and extended care services. Primary care clinics are available at both campuses and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Peru, Goshen, South Bend and Muncie, Indiana. Although the Marion Campus is well over 110 years old and the Fort Wayne Campus was constructed in 1950, recently completed renovations and construction, and continuous maintenance, ensure an attractive, state-of-the-art healthcare environment.

Qualifications:
  • Must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Minimum one year experience in urgent care.
  • Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine.
  • Must be certified in BLS and ACLS.
  • Must have up to date proof of immunizations and COVID vaccinations.
  • Must be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the patient information submittals.

Requirements (including but not limited):
  • Attendance in the Urgent Care department, C ommunity Living Center, Acute/Chronic Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Residential Recovery Treatment Program.
  • Evaluation, Emergent Treatment and Management: Employment of the principles of Urgent care for life/limb threats, resuscitation and stabilization, triage, diagnosis and disposition or transfer.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of minor wound care, respiratory illness, gastrointestinal illness, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, dermatological illness, ENT, eye and urological problems.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of minor procedures such as local infiltration anesthesia, incision and drainage, simple laceration repair, nail trephination, electro-coagulation, nasal cautery, gastric lavage, bladder catheterization, peripheral venous line insertion, and spinal immobilization.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of abdominal and gastrointestinal disorders of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon rectum and anus, liver and biliary tree and pancreas with stabilization and transfer of surgical abdominal emergences
  • Initial evaluation, and management of cardiovascular disorders involving cardiac failure, differential diagnosis of chest pain, cardiac rhythm and conduction defects with stabilization and transfer of Cardiac emergencies such as Acute Coronary syndrome, Cardiac Tamponade, and SVT or a fib with RVR.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of emergent disorders caused by antigens, organisms and other foreign substances such as reactions of hypersensitivity; reactions from venoms, bites and stings; reactions caused by infectious agents; disorders due to chemical, drug and physical agents; and disorders associated with the environment to include barotraumas, near drowning, electrical injury, hypothermia and radiation injury.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of disorders of the hematopoietic system such as anemia, coagulopathy and management of acute neoplastic disease complication.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of disorders of endocrine, metabolic and nutritional natures relating to acid-base disturbances, adrenal, and parathyroid disorders.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of disorders of the head and neck involving the ears, nose, oral cavity, larynx/trachea, face and vestibular system with initial stabilization and transfer of intercranial emergences such as Epidural or subdural hematoma or SAH.
  • Initial evaluation, treatment and management of Urgent disorders of the eye involving the lids and lachrymal apparatus conjunctiva, cornea, sclera, internal aspects of the globe and orbit.
  • Initial evaluation, Urgent treatment and management of disorders (including trauma) of the musculoskeletal system involving shoulder girdle, upper extremity and hand, lower extremity and foot, thorax and vertebrae and arthropathies.
