Communications Manager

Salary Range: $69,680 - $83,200/yr

Job Summary

The purpose of the Communications Manager is to develop and institute communication strategies to deliver the mission of the Zoo as not only a conservation organization, but also promote events, attractions, and programs to grow revenue and attendance. This position is the contact for all media outlets, serves as the main spokesperson for the Zoo, and it oversees the Zoo's public relations from media, social media to print communications.

Schedule : Monday-Friday, occasional weekends are required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Communications strategy - Plan and execute a communications strategy to deliver our brand message and promote events and programs to the public and other stakeholders to generate attendance and revenue. Develop messaging and determine appropriate communications channels including media, written communications, and digital platforms.
  • Media strategy - Serve as the primary media contact and Zoo spokesperson, or determine appropriate staff member, for all inquiries from local to international media outlets. Work with media from initial contact to conclusion. Cultivate and foster relationships with media. Plan and execute press conferences.
  • Written communications - Develop, write, and edit content including, but not limited to, news releases, media alerts, media statements, promotional pieces (gate brochures, event programs, information brochures), website content, talking points, monthly employee newsletter and Zoo annual report. Work with creative team to develop materials and external printers.
  • Zoo Website - Manage website from technical requirements to content. Coordinate the content calendar based on the marketing strategy, develop the content based on needs and analytics to grow impressions, and maintain website style guide. Serve as the lead contact for the external website developer/host.
  • Digital Marketing Program - Oversee the social media program, email newsletter, and visual identity. Create and edit content. Develop relationships with strategic digital partners and influencers. Manage content calendars to be in alignment with marketing strategy, our online reputation (comments, reviews), and style guides. Lead the Photography & Video Production Coordinator to maintain a strong visual identity and style.
  • Leadership and Human Resources - Supervise the work and performance of the Communications section. Provide leadership through motivation, engagement, feedback, support and development. Maximize employee and team effectiveness. Schedule and direct work assignments and authorize time recording. Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, and evaluation of the team. Maintain a positive culture of collaboration, accountability, and respectful behavior.
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 20 lbs.; ability to push and pull up to 15 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, License/Certification and Experiences

  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License required and must be maintained throughout incumbency
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or closely related field required
  • Five (5) years or more of work experience in Media Relations, Professional Writing, Public Relations, Communications or Journalismrequired
  • One (1) year or more of work experience in a Supervisory or Management role required
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams required
  • Previous work experience with content management systems, Google analytics, social media platforms and email marketing required
  • Must have the ability and confidence to act as spokesperson.
  • Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience using Smartsheet preferred
