Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is seeking a candidate for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position teaching theater within the English, Speech, Theater and Journalism department. As an open-access institution, Harold Washington College is a dynamic, vertical campus located in the city’s theatre district (the Loop) with students attending from all over Chicago and the world.

The ideal candidate for this position should have demonstrated success and/or expertise in the following areas:

  1. Working in an urban environment with diverse learners.
  2. Applying inclusive active learning teaching strategies within the classroom.
  3. Teaching college-level theater courses.
  4. Working in design/technical aspects of theater.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Teach a variety of theater courses each semester, primarily face-to-face, with an emphasis on the Intro to Theatre and Stagecraft courses.
  2. Contribute to the college’s theater program as the technical director.
  3. Serve as a designer for Loop Players, the college’s 58-year-old theatre company.
  4. Promote an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to solve problems using discipline-specific thinking strategies.
  5. Employ various summative and formative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  6. Mentor students to help them reach their academic, personal, and career goals.
  7. Foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  8. Promote awareness and involvement in the college’s theatre program both on and off campus.

Qualifications:

  1. PhD in Theatre or Performance Studies, or
  2. Masters or MFA in Theater Arts or Drama.
  3. Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to communicate with a diverse, multilingual group of students and staff required.
  4. Commitment to the open access mission of the college.
