The Biologics Center (NBC) is accommodated within the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). NBC, in collaboration with the disease areas and technical expert groups, builds the future biologics therapy pipeline of Novartis through the discovery and creation of new antibody, protein, nucleic acid and virus-based molecules.


The Senior Scientist, Downstream Early Pipeline Development, supports lentivirus (LVV) gene therapy pipeline portfolio, developing a robust platform process for existing and novel LVV pseudotypes/cargo vectors, and building improved process technologies for LVV production. This role is also responsible for executing early-stage process development with the focus on developability of novel viral platforms.


What you’ll be doing:

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform small-scale purification process including ultracentrifugation, column chromatography, cell lysis, clarification, AKTA and TFF unit operations, and depth filtration for manufacturing of LVV gene therapy vectors across multiple preclinical programs and disease areas to ensure on time delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with upstream process development and analytical development teams to develop a robust, scalable process for LVV production.
  • Contribute to experimental design and execution for early development as well as innovative technology and platform evaluation for next generation capsids and cargo vectors.
  • Assist knowledge transfer and work collaboratively with Technical Research & Development team to advance pipeline programs into clinical phases.
  • Prepare protocols, reports and provide high quality data and electronic notebook documentation.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will require 0% travel as defined by the business (domestic and/or international).


Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related technical field with 5+ years relevant experience or Master's with 3 years of relevant experience, or PHD with 0+ years of relevant experience.
  • Previous experience with a variety of biopharmaceutical purification processes such as chromatographic separation, depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, adventitious viral clearance, and impurity clearance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
  • Individual team player who demonstrates technical proficiency and creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought. Ability to work in a matrix environment.
  • Strong organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to details.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of viral gene therapy and previous experience with viral vector process development is preferred.
