Description
Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blended learning strategies.
To support student achievement in grades kindergarten through twelve, through focused guidance and counseling activities. Provide both direct and indirect services, including teacher and parent consultation as may be necessary and appropriate.
  • SUBSTITUTE COUNSELOR: On-call position only. Half Day or Full-Day. Benefits available once an employee works a minimum of 630 hours within the current school year.
  • RATE OF PAY: Full Day - $180.00 / Half day - $90.00
  • CERTIFICATE REQUIRED: This position requires a Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certificate with the appropriate Endorsement to work in the content area advertised in this posting. The Professional Education Standards Board (PESB), can provide additional endorsement requirement information through their site;
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE CHECK REQUIRED . A fingerprint background check is required for all prospective employees prior to start date.
Responsibilities
For students in grades Kindergarten - Twelve:
  1. Provide personal, social, academic, and career guidance.
  2. Provide referrals for individual and family counseling to outside resources. Provide intervention and referral for students with alcohol and other drug-related problems.
  3. Provide classroom guidance activities.
  4. Ensure all students have access to a comprehensive guidance program.
  5. Communicate with parents/guardians.
  6. Participate in interventions in the BECCA process.
  7. Provide support to students/staff/families in the areas of 504 and special education.
  8. Coordinate student conferences with staff and family members.
  9. Monitor achievement of students and work collaboratively with staff to provide appropriate interventions.
  10. Provide information to parents/guardians regarding student progress when requested.
  11. Provide an exit interview for students who are transitioning to a different setting.
  12. Collaborate with staff in identifying students who need special programs and facilitate that placement.
  13. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal/designee.
  14. Work with students on the development of leadership skills.
  15. Collect and analyze achievement, discipline and school climate data in order to promote student achievement and engagement.
  16. Be acquainted with and provide information, resources and leadership around cultural competency as it relates to student achievement and engagement.
  17. Be acquainted with and provide information, resources and leadership around bullying and harassment as it relates to student achievement and engagement.
  18. Knowledge of elementary, middle, and high school curriculum to support student's successful transition to high school level.
Qualifications
  1. Educational staff associate (ESA) certification at the residency certification or professional certification level.
  2. Knowledge of the curriculum and of unique student characteristics at the elementary school level.
  3. Ability to administer group tests and interpret results to students, parents, and teachers.
  4. Demonstrate ability to conduct effective individual, small group, and classroom guidance/counseling activities with students.
  5. Demonstrated ability to assist students and families to help locate community resources.
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate with parents/guardians.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with school staff.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work with the public, such as community groups, volunteers, etc.
  9. Knowledge of district policies and procedures pertaining to student rights and responsibilities, student records, attendance, confidentiality, and special programs.
  10. Ability to assist in the general operation of the school as a member of the school staff.
  11. Demonstrated familiarity with, and successful implementation of culturally relevant counseling strategies.
  12. Demonstrated success in working with student on appropriate prevention/intervention strategies.
  13. Knowledge of laws relating to child abuse and neglect and ability to effectively intervene.
  14. Demonstrated success in developing and implementing elementary to middle school transition programs, including pre-k to kindergarten and elementary to middle school.
  15. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff.
  16. Demonstrated familiarity with, and successful implementation of restorative practice strategies.
  17. Knowledge of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) model and how it is implemented in the school setting.
  18. Familiarity with elementary and middle school written, taught and tested curriculum.

  1. Work Schedule - Days and hours (listed above) are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays - Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement () as negotiated.
