Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtime. Network and Engineering Services manages the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure (e.g., wired/WAN, wireless, security/firewall) required to offer network connectivity, such as network cabling, routers, and firewalls. This includes connecting devices (e.g., Internet of Things devices) to the network, network access management, securing access to networks, and appropriate authentication (e.g., network registration systems, VPN, and NAC).


Position Summary

The Director of Network Services will be responsible for leading a team of network engineers and analysts in designing, implementing, and maintaining the university's network infrastructure, including wireless, WAN, wired, research, and firewall services. The Director of Network Services will manage and provide network design guidance including design and implementation of routers, switches, firewalls, servers, wireless networks, and other networking equipment. This leader's team will perform network analysis and planning, determine equipment requirements, establish and implement procedures, and the Director of Network Services will supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff. This leader will understand the university's IT priorities and digital strategy so they can advise on network services leading technologies and services for UCLA. The Director, Network Services will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  1. Seven years of experience working in network services or information technology or related field. (Required)
  2. Five years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, or related field. (Required)
  3. Significant experience in managing large-scale, complex network environments, including experience in wireless, WAN, wired, research, and firewall services. (Required)
  4. Significant experience managing a team of network engineers and technicians, as well as managing vendor relationships and contract negotiations. (Required)
  5. Significant experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks. Advanced knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure the quick resolution of issues. (Required)
  6. Demonstrated experience leading and managing teams, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. (Required)
  7. Significant experience leading others in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks. (Required)
  8. Significant experience solving complex, technical and non-technical problems with budget, timeline, and other resource implications. (Required)
  9. Significant experience providing inclusive leadership of others, advancing an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. (Required)
  10. Ten or more years of experience working in network services or information technology. (Preferred)
  11. Six or more years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. (Preferred)
  12. Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  13. Advanced technical skills in network design, configuration, and troubleshooting, as well as knowledge of network protocols such as TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, and VLANs. (Required)
  14. Highly skilled in written and verbal communications and is able to communicate on behalf of teams and relay highly complex technical information. Significant experience communicating with technical and non-technical leaders. (Required)
  15. Highly advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience delivering multiple complex projects, delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, managing others, and coaching teams on the prioritization of competing project/customer needs. (Required)
  16. Able to delegate solutioning when appropriate to the proper resources. Experience operating as a point of escalation. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required)
  17. Integrates creative thinking and industry-leading practices into diverse team operations; has experience inspiring teams to innovate and grow. Has significant experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience/training. (Required)
  2. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems. (Preferred)
  3. Cisco Certified Network Professional certification (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications. (Preferred)
  4. CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. (Preferred)
  5. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) Certifications. (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement).
  • The anticipated pay range for this position is $172,346 - $180,915, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
