A full-time Postdoctoral Scholar position is available on an annual 12-month appointment in the Cao Lab at the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington ( The anticipated start date is January 2024. The Department is internationally renowned for excellence in research and training in the areas of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, drug transport, and drug delivery.

The Cao Lab ( within the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position. Our research group is an interdisciplinary team focused on two cutting-edge areas: mucosal immunoengineering and microbiome pharmaceutics. The overarching goal of our work is to develop innovative and translatable solutions aimed at preventing and treating a spectrum of immunological disorders such as allergies, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be focusing on:

  1. Designing and synthesizing novel polymers and biomaterials for the targeted/controlled delivery of microbial metabolites or other immunomodulatory molecules.
  2. Evaluating the functionality of these materials both in vitro and in vivo.
  3. Independently managing the project while collaboratively determining its future direction with the Principal Investigator.

The successful candidate will work closely with the PI and collaborators in a highly collaborative environment. They will plan and perform experiments, write manuscripts, and participate in and present research findings at local and national meetings.

The salary for this position will be $5,705 per month ($68,460 annually), or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This is a grant-funded 12-month appointment renewable for up to three years provided funding availability and performance.

Minimum Requirements

Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry, or closely related field.

A strong track record in organic chemistry and polymer synthesis is highly desirable, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Proficiency in analytical techniques including but not limited to NMR, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GPC, DLS, and UV/Vis.

Previous experience in animal work is preferred; candidates must be willing to work with animals.

The candidate must be self-motivated and willing to acquire new skills and enjoy working both independently and in a team setting. Excellent attention to detail, good organization, and communication skills are essential to success.
