Network Support Specialist

Job Description
Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Network Support Specialist in Information Technology Services. This position will install, maintain, and troubleshoot voice and data network devices and infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Voice and Data Network Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance Activities - 65%

• Analyze, recommend, and implement voice and data network design strategies following industry best practices. This will include evaluating equipment technical specifications; installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and configuring voice and data equipment (PBX's, voice terminals, Ethernet switching equipment, voice and data cabling, voice and data cabling distribution points, and the like.)
• Monitor voice and data systems on an ongoing basis to quickly identify bottlenecks, failures, or other issues and report them to the supervisor and, if possible, correct the issue promptly yourself.
• Perform troubleshooting and effect repairs or replacement of failed voice or data communications equipment as needed.
• Closely monitor ITS's ticketing system for incoming requests for adds/moves/changes or repairs. Respond to these requests in a timely manner. Interact with the ticketing system to document the work flow and ultimate resolution.
• Respond to urgent situations outside normal working hours. Keep your peers and the supervisor apprised of days and times when you know in advance you would be unable to respond to urgent or emergency issues.
• Interact daily with "customers" from all across our campus. Maintain a polite and professional relationship with peers and with customers. Ensure that customer's voice and data network needs are being met. Take appropriate action when problems are discovered.
• Report regularly to the supervisor and to other units as to the overall state of PSU's voice and data infrastructure and identify potential issues before problems arise.

Ongoing Technical Research, Vendor Relations and Procurement - 15%

• Assist in the development of bid specifications and help identify potential equipment and vendors that could potentially submit bids.
• Interact with vendors and provide an assessment of vendor competence and product offerings to supervisor.
• Procure quotes for equipment and services from prospective vendors while meeting all PSU and State of Kansas purchasing processes.
• Conduct independent research on current developments and trends in the industry. Inform the supervisor of possible opportunities to leverage emerging technology or new services that could improve operations and/or reduce costs.

Documentation - 10%

• Maintain current documentation and identification tagging for the university cabling infrastructure. Maintain an inventory and documentation for the type and location of various voice and data equipment.

Training - 5%

• Provide impromptu and, if needed, formal training for end-users as needed.

Other - 5%

• Other duties as needed / directed by the supervisor.

Education and Experience:
Required Education and Experience at Hire -

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Three years of experience with IT networking or telecom. Education may be substituted for experience as determined by the university.

Preferred Education and Experience -

• Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in a position with similar duties and responsibilities
