The Psychiatric Institute of Washington

Provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare for children, adolescents, adults, and senior adults suffering from mental health and addictive illnesses. PIW is a 130 bed, short-term, acute care hospital offering inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient hospitalization, as well as specialized treatment programs for chemical dependency. PIW has an excellent reputation a s an innovative hospital with caring, dedicated staff, experienced in the delivery of behavioral healthcare. Situated in the safe, historical Tenleytown neighborhood, PIW is one mile from the Tenleytown Metro stop and within walking distance to local cafes and restaurants.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for assisting in managing and supervising the Clinical Assessment Center and the coordination of this service with other hospital departments, in providing service to patients. Primary responsibilities include supervision of Clinical Assessment Center staff, monitoring and directing inquiry calls, organizing tasks related to the operation of the Clinical Assessment Center, and compiling and reporting statistical information. Abide by the Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Plan at all times and in all areas.

Ensures that the staff schedule and configuration will meet the needs and demands of callers, based on documented statistical reports. Ensures that all shifts are appropriately covered. Authorizes no paid time off unless coverage has been arranged.

  • Monitors change of shift communications and reporting between staff members as well as other departments involved in the ongoing operation of the services.
  • Notifies Director of Clinical Assessment Center immediately regarding sensitive inquiry calls.
  • Ensures all patient information is accurately entered into the computer system at the time of the admission.
  • Ensures cooperative, constructive working relationships with all other hospital departments.
  • Follows written hospital and/or department procedures and protocols.
  • Implements and coordinates an end-of-shift reporting model to ensure accurate information exchange.
  • Completes daily and monthly staffing schedules for CAC staff. Prepares and posts completed schedules
  • Collaborates with Director of Clinical Assessment Center to ensure CAC goals and objectives are consistent with overall hospital goals and objectives.
  • Develops goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to the operational needs of the service.
  • Develops and assists in supervising a system that ensures inquiry calls are answered in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner.
  • Monitors the FTE usage.
  • Is actively involved in and aware of all inquiries, patient admissions, patient discharges, patient transfers, and caller dispositions.
  • Develops and assists in supervising a system that ensures patient documentation is complete, accurate, and legible
  • Attends Morning meetings (as designated by the Director of Clinical Assessment Center) where all inquiry calls and dispositions are reviewed.
  • Meets daily with Director to review the upcoming schedule and to address problem areas from the previous 24 hours.
  • Ensures that daily "flash report" pending action log and CAC copies are available for Morning Meeting.
  • Assists in meeting census level goals.
  • Maintains professional, courteous, and effective ongoing relationship with referral sources.
  • Provides education, support, and recognition to staff.
  • Handles or refers all patient, family, and referral source complaints promptly.
  • Ensures quality assurance compliance in Director's absence.
  • In coordination with the Director of CAC, maintains and allocates adequate resources of well-qualified staff.
  • Ensures that hiring, disciplinary action, and termination procedures are timely and conducted in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Involves Director in all above responsibilities prior to implementation.
  • Ensures adequate supervision and yearly evaluation processes for staff members.
  • Ensures adequate Clinical Assessment Center orientation for new employees, attending physicians, and allied health professionals.
  • Assists in providing for educational needs and professional development of staff.
  • Assists with the orientation of new staff as well as the teaching of Staff Development programs as requested.
  • Participates in Hospital Committees as assigned.
  • Communicates with clients in the reception area regarding the expected wait prior to being evaluated.
  • Completes all evaluation-related and admission-related paperwork appropriately and within the timeframes outlined in current policy.
  • Responds to telephone calls within three (3) rings in a manner that is professional, courteous, organized, and caring.
  • Contact referral sources to notify of bed availability and to perform a general assessment of customer needs to support ongoing communication.
  • Participates in all activities as requested or assigned by Senior Management staff.
  • Provide clinical supervision to hospital staff as requested.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Current licensure in the mental health field with minimum of five (5) years psychiatric assessment experience. Two years supervisory experience. OR a Bachelor's degree in the mental health field with a minimum of ten (10) years experience conducting psychiatric evaluations and two years supervising psychiatric assessment staff.

Demonstrates ability to engage in a therapeutic relationship by maintaining appropriate boundaries and effective limits.

Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities.

Ability to work in high stress work environment and maintain high energy level to attend to varied tasks.
