Job Description:

Education is the focus for this Corporate Counsel opportunity with Pathways Management Group.

Pathways Management Group operates a national network of non-profit public schools and learning programs that partner with state and local school districts to serve our communities and support at-risk and underserved youth. PMG schools utilize a blended learning model that connects students to a wide variety of instructional modalities, helping every student find success in junior high, high school and beyond.

Your assigned work location is Pasadena, CA - 95% of our workforce select to be remote. The role may require a 20 day a year in person days for company events, professional development and client meetings.

The Corporate Counsel will be responsible for the overall function of the legal department of a large charter school management company. The Corporate Counsel will provide legal project management and guidance relating to a variety of topics including California Education Code interpretation and charter school law, charter school operations, for-profit and nonprofit company operations including governance and corporate formalities, and real estate acquisition and management. This position will supervise pending and active litigation matters including mediations and arbitrations, and will also act as a liaison for local governments and local school districts to help promote company expansion.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Reduces the use of external counsel and manages legal billing.
  2. Assess and coordinate responses to legal issues, including but not limited to: employment claims, governance issues, subpoenas, contracts, and other legal issues as they arise.
  3. Drafts or oversees the drafting of contracts, governance documents, leases, and other legal documents as necessary.
  4. Develops or oversees the development of written products, including policy briefs, research memos, and presentations that concisely and clearly describe complex legal issues and provide analyses and policy options to management.
  5. Performs other miscellaneous duties as required by the President or his/her representatives.

  2. Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise way.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting.
  4. Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines.
  5. Ability to make decisions, exercising reasonable judgment with minimal guidance and/or supervision.
  6. Ability to work effectively under pressure and demonstrate problem-solving skills, while maintaining diplomacy, courtesy, professionalism and a customer service attitude.
  7. Ability to change direction as priorities shift and thrive in environments that require the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  8. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  9. Must have knowledge of or willingness to learn and research current Educational Policy.

Education and Experience:

  1. 2-3 years’ in-house counsel experience required.
  2. Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school and admittance to the State Bar of California is required.
  3. Experience in education or an education related field a plus, but not required.
