The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non-profit, multi-site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco. The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services.

We are currently looking for qualified candidates for our Medical Assistant (M.A.) position. Please note: this role requires an applicant to be bilingual (English/Spanish). This position reports to the Clinic Supervisor and is a Full Time, Non-Exempt role with a starting hourly rate of $26.24.
Primary Objective:
The Medical Assistant is an essential part of the care team and plays a vital role in ensuring exceptional patient care and operational efficiency. Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant performs a range of clinical and administrative tasks. These include welcoming and checking in patients, assisting with patient preparation, managing incoming calls, coordinating patient flow, maintaining exam room supplies, preparing charts and electronic medical records for scheduled appointments, scheduling new and follow-up appointments, and other assigned duties. The Medical Assistant may also be assigned to different departments or locations to handle front desk, back office, or hands-on clinic responsibilities as needed to ensure efficient patient flow. Some assignments may involve working evenings or weekends. MNHC is certified as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH), which requires staff to actively participate in morning huddles, team meetings, and similar activities
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
Clinical Support

  1. Prepare patients for examination by taking vital signs, documenting medical history, and verifying the purpose of the visit.
  2. Assist healthcare providers during patient examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  3. Perform basic laboratory/point-of-care tests, such as blood drawings, urinalysis, and specimen collection.
  4. Administer medications, injections, and immunizations as directed by healthcare providers.
  5. Prepare exam rooms by ensuring cleanliness and availability of necessary supplies.
  6. Maintain and manage medical equipment, ensuring proper functioning and cleanliness.
  7. Ensure a clean and safe environment by maintaining infection control protocols.
Patient Education & Communication
  1. Educate patients about medical procedures, treatments, and medication instructions.
  2. Provide patients with information about preventive care, lifestyle modifications, and self-management techniques.
  3. Answer patient inquiries regarding test results, medications, and referrals.
  4. Ensure effective communication between patients, healthcare providers, and other staff members.
  5. Foster a supportive and empathetic environment to enhance patient satisfaction.
Administrative Support
  1. Assist with patient scheduling, appointment reminders, and coordination of referrals.
  2. Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records (EMR) and other patient documentation.
  3. Prepare and organize patient charts for scheduled appointments.
  4. Ensure compliance with privacy and confidentiality regulations.
  5. Provide translation services when necessary (English/Spanish).
  6. Assist in patient check-in and check-out processes, including verifying personal information and insurance details.
  7. Manage incoming calls, schedule appointments, and coordinate patient flow to optimize efficiency.
PCMH Participation & Support
  1. Actively engage in PCMH initiatives, such as care coordination and patient engagement.
  2. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to enhance the quality and coordination of care.
  3. Contribute to the collection and analysis of patient feedback and satisfaction surveys.
  4. Assist in the implementation of PCMH-related protocols and processes.
  5. Participate in ongoing training and professional development to ensure PCMH compliance.
Qualifications
Education
  1. Bilingual in Spanish/English required
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent
  3. Completion of a recognized Medical Assistant training program required
  4. Basic Life Support Certificate
  5. National Certification as a Medical Assistant strongly preferred
  6. As a condition of employment, all candidates are required to meet specific immunization standards. Documentation of current immunizations, including Varicella, TDAP, COVID-19, MMR, and Hepatitis B, as well as TB test results valid within the last two (2) years must be submitted before the start date. Failure to provide this documentation may result in a delayed start or withdrawal of the job offer.
Experience
  1. Six months' medical assistant experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  2. Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  3. Non-profit, community health care setting experience preferred.
  4. Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems is a plus.
  5. Basic knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
