JOB SUMMARY
The Academic Counselor position advises undergraduate students about course registration, graduation requirements, and degree planning. The Academic Counselor provides academic coaching and support for specific student populations. Each Academic Counselor is responsible for individual projects/collateral duties that vary according to their skills, background and interests and the needs of the department and university.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide academic advising for undergraduate students via in-person, video conference, e-mail, and phone appointments and drop-in advising consultations.
- Provide advisement about the St. Thomas core curriculum and interpretation of student degree evaluations
- Assist students in course selection, course sequencing, four-year graduation plans
- Provide support for a caseload of specific students, including students with an Academic Warning status. Personalized student support includes advisement about topics time management, study skills, motivation, habits, etc.
- Remain current on the scholarship of academic advising and engaged in professional development opportunities related to advising and student development
- Fulfill specific collateral responsibilities for the department and university. Examples of collateral duties include:
- Provide technical direction and support for the Academic Counseling department. Provide leadership related to advising systems, technology, data collection, reporting and website development
- Administer and certify military benefits for veteran students via direction and oversight from the Veteran’s Program Manager
- Provide direction and support for specific student populations or programs
- Advise and direct course registration processes for first year students, transfer students, re-enrolling students
- Provide advisement and course registration direction for first time first year (FTFY) students via the Orientation & Registration program/processes
- Meet with new transfer students and re-enrolling students. Provide guidance about degree requirements, assist them with course registration, interpretation of transfer credits, etc.
- Additional projects/collateral duties. Examples may include:
- Representation on campus committees
- Programs, events, projects that support students’ persistence and graduation
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degre
- Two years of experience in an academic setting, preferably in academic advising and/or student affairs/student services
- Experience working with students from various backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Experience as an academic advisor/counselor or related higher education experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
