We are looking for multiple highly talented developers with experience and interest in state-of-the-art web development and visual data science. You will enjoy being part of a world-renowned research institute and work closely with PhD students, PostDocs, software engineers, and faculty members on developing cutting-edge web-based visualization tools.

The SCI Institute and the Visualization Design Lab

The SCI Institute is a world-class research institute located within the new Warnock Engineering Building on the University of Utah campus. We are a highly dynamic, driven group of over 170 faculty, staff, and students. The overarching goals of the SCI Institute’s scientific computing research are to create new techniques, tools, and systems, by which scientists may solve problems affecting various aspects of human life. We believe that to advance the state-of-the-art and create meaningful computational solutions for such complex systems, one needs to advance research in a number of areas within scientific computing, including: visualization, simulation, and modeling. These positions are within the Visualization Design Lab at the SCI Institute. You will contribute to projects involving visualization and analysis of cell microscopy data, disease surveillance data, making data visualization accessible, and building infrastructure for user studies. Our team currently employs two software developers, so you will be able to interact with and learn from your peers. For more information, visit .

Requisites

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with HTML and web technologies.
  • Good knowledge of server technology and databases.
  • Independent and reliable team player.
  • A willingness to collaborate in a highly diverse, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must.

Responsibilities (specifics will vary by seniority)

  • Work with faculty and students in designing and developing client-server applications in support of research projects.
  • Independently develop user interfaces, APIs, and server components with state-of-the-art web front-end technologies like HTML5, SCSS, Vue, React, Typescript, D3.js, Vega, deck.gl, Quasar chart.js and back-end technologies such as Django, ArangoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Firebase.
  • Create and maintain build, testing, and deployment systems with Git, Github, Slack, Docker, AWS, webpack, npm, and many others.
  • Develop high-quality and well-documented code.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive continuous improvement within the development team.
  • Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to the team, and embracing a mindset of receiving feedback gracefully for self-improvement.
  • You will be contributing to cutting-edge visual analysis projects.

Start Date and Term

Start date is immediate. The initial appointment will be for a one-year period, with the possibility of an extension based upon performance and availability of funding.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). 2 years of experience in web software development or related area.
