This role will report directly to the CEO while working closely with the executive team, and will be central to helping ZeroTier scale. The position will be responsible for growing, evolving, and operationally optimizing the ZeroTier platform during a rapid growth phase for the company and the larger network security industry.

Responsibilities
Team Management: Lead the entire Engineering org across Platform Engineering, Service Engineering, Ops, Test/Release, and IT/Security functions. Help manage a skillful transition from a small team operating with a high level of autonomy to a larger team requiring more process and structure. Supervise the hiring and onboarding of new team members as they integrate with the existing team. Mentor and guide the entire engineering team to improve execution without sacrificing morale or risking the loss of valuable staff.
Technical Leadership: Deeply understand the problem domain including areas like B2B SaaS product delivery, networking, identity management, distributed systems, cryptography, and information security. Seek to build products that are clean, efficient, and easy to use. Understand how the latest technology trends, frameworks, programming standards, etc. may impact our roadmap, resourcing, and priorities. Ensure all technology practices adhere to regulatory, governance, and cybersecurity standards.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Empower teams to innovate and engage the ZeroTier user base, creating amazing experiences for our free users, paying customers, and commercial partners. Partner with the executive team to define ZeroTier’s roadmap and deliverables, supporting ongoing sales opportunities and ZeroTier’s go-to-market strategy. Periodically report on KPIs, development roadmap, and milestones to the Board and relevant stakeholders. Lead by example to set the tone for others -- frequently providing guidance outside formal reporting structures.
Technical Execution: Help define and then own all engineering workstreams on ZeroTier’s roadmap. Lead teams in developing high-quality products as well as the supporting infrastructure required to deliver them at scale. Develop well-scoped work plans that meet business goals, balancing quality, time, and cost. Play a hands-on role in managing major platform and commercial launches. Establish escalation workflows to address critical technical issues related to customer, platform, and development operations.
Results-Orientation: Focus on outcomes while thinking strategically, balancing both short- and long-term goals. Utilize platform and product data to inform key product decisions and future investment.
Experience
Wired to find solutions, take action, and transform developed capabilities into fully realized platforms. Management & Leadership: 10+ years managing engineering teams inside companies where speed, agility, and delivery cadence were essential. 3+ years of leadership experience in an early to mid-stage startup, preferably during a rapid team and/or business growth phase. Seasoned management skills with a successful track record of hiring, performance management, coaching, remote interaction, onboarding & supporting high-performing engineers and teams. Demonstrated ability to lead diverse & remote teams (10+ engineers across the US and Europe). Familiar with agile product development processes but knows when to deviate from what's prescribed based on what makes sense for the team and business. Passionate, energetic, optimistic, and results-driven with deep experience and comfort collaborating with product, sales, and marketing teams.
Qualifications
Familiarity with the corporate/enterprise virtual networking ecosystem. Proven track record in hiring, developing, and managing software engineering and operations teams from diverse and remote backgrounds. Strong technical product orientation – ability to embrace “the whole product.” Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Permanent authorization to reside and work in the US (we are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time). Willingness and ability to travel domestically and potentially internationally.
