About the Job

Summary of Position

The Undergraduate Office of Admissions is seeking a highly motivated, focused, and results-oriented Admissions Counselor, who will have special responsibility working with prospective American Indian students and communities. This person will facilitate the enrollment of qualified students from a variety of backgrounds and represent the University of Minnesota to the public, provide exceptional customer service to prospective students and their families, and play a crucial role in shaping the University's freshman class.

This exempt position is a 100%-time, 12-month, annually renewable appointment in the academic professional and administrative (P&A) personnel series. The job code for this position will be SS Pro 2-Admissions (9702AN) or SS Pro 3-Admissions (9703AN), depending on qualifications. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, 22 PTO days, one personal holiday in addition to the existing 11 University holidays.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Admissions Counselor, 9702AN)
Recruitment and Outreach (25%)

* Recruit and facilitate enrollment of prospective American Indian undergraduate students, primarily from Minnesota.
* Implement extensive recruitment and relationship-building efforts utilizing written, telephone, and in-person communication to prospective students, applicants, and admitted students.
* Serve as contact for prospective students in Minnesota.
* Present at high school programs, recruitment events, and school counselor meetings.
* Represent the University of Minnesota Twin Cities at college fairs and other recruitment events hosted in market
* Responsible for Native American community outreach and recruitment coordination
Counseling, Advising and Customer Service (20%)

* Provide admissions counseling to prospective students, their parents, and guidance counselors.
* Serve as one-stop contact for freshman admissions; provide advising and assistance throughout the admission process to students, family members, and high school counselors.
* Provide extra mile customer service to prospective students and their families regarding admissions.
Visits and Events (20%)

* Participate in the execution of the office's Visits and Events programs
* Meet with students and their families on campus to provide admissions information and support them in taking the next step in the enrollment process.
* Event planning and management; lead, host, and/or manage targeted recruitment events for American Indian students
* Deliver on-campus information sessions to recruit students to apply and enroll at the University of Minnesota
* Coordinate specialized group visits for American Indian student groups visiting campus in partnership with our visit office leadership
Partnerships and Relationship Management (20%)

* Serve as a key liaison with high school counselors, independent counselors, Indian Educators and other school officials.
* Liaison to key campus partners and student groups such as but not limited to the Circle of Indigenous Nations, American Indian Studies Department, and American Indian Student Cultural Center
* Native American Promise Plus Tuition Program Liaison
Application Review (10%)

* Evaluate academic and other credentials for admission decision and counseling purposes.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

* Liaise on communication projects
* Maintain key community resources for American Indian students

Senior Counselor Expanded Responsibilities (9703AN)

* Expand recruitment and commitment initiatives and tactics for the transfer student population
* Participate in the design and delivery of internal training programs
* Serve as a mentor to new staff and support in onboarding
* Interpret data and provide suggestions for implementing changes or new ideas in reflection of data analysis
* Expanded responsibility in key stakeholder relationship management

The Admissions Counselor salary range is $45,000 - $48,000 depending on qualifications, the Senior Admissions Counselor salary range is $48,000 - $53,000 depending on qualifications.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid with onsite location in the Williamson Building, Office of Admissions, 231 Pillsbury Dr SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications - Admissions Counselor (9702AN)

* BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or master's degree.
* Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in practice
* Must have a valid driver's license; must be able to travel regionally for extended periods and work evenings/weekends and some holidays as needed.
* Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Additional Required Qualifications - Senior Admissions Counselor (9703AN)

* Qualifications listed above
* BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus two years of relevant experience.
* Previous experience working with specialized populations in a recruitment and/or advising setting

Preferred Qualifications

* Event planning or project management experience preferred.
* Preference given to candidates with University of Minnesota experience defined broadly such as former student, graduate, employee, or community member of any campus.
* Preference given to candidates with community based organization experience that work with or serve American Indian communities
* Public speaking skills/experience
* Preference given to candidates with admissions experience.
