Florence B. Selden Fellow: Yale University Art Gallery

General Purpose: Reporting to the Curators of Prints and Drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, the Selden Fellow will supervise the department’s active study room and act as the primary liaison between the department and faculty teaching from the collections of works on paper. The Fellow will prepare and follow through to publication the list of the department’s acquisitions in the Gallery’s annual Bulletin, conduct scholarly research to catalogue new acquisitions, answer queries about the collection, and interact with scholars, students, and the public on matters concerning the collection. The Fellow may also have the opportunity to assist with the organization of exhibitions.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees class and scholar visits to the study room.
- Works with the department to prepare acquisition lists and other related sections of the annual museum Bulletin.
- Conducts research on new acquisitions and catalogues them in TMS (The Museum System). Builds comprehensive curatorial files on both new and prior acquisitions.
- On occasion, gives talks and special presentations to classes and the general public. Interacts with the public, visiting scholars, and students seeking information on the collections; answers scholarly inquiries and general correspondence.
- Participates in collections maintenance, and ensures the special care, security, and proper handling of the collection of prints and drawings.
- Assists with exhibitions, publications, and programs organized by the department, up to and including research, liaising with internal and external colleagues, gathering images, writing labels and other material. Assists curators museum-wide in planning for rotations of works in permanent collection galleries.
- Assists the curators and senior museum assistant with the supervision of undergraduate work study students.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience: M.A. in Art History or related field.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to object-based teaching with a strong interest in the graphic arts; ability to handle original works of art with care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with the staff and the public in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
- Ability to exercise discretion and to be a team player in an active office and museum environment.
- Well-developed written communication skills.
- Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Museum and/or teaching experience; familiarity with European languages.
