BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Provides preventive maintenance and repairs on clinical equipment and medical networks. Maintains all required equipment documentation and appropriate parts inventory. Provides user training and investigates medical device safety issues as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Supervisory Responsibilities: NO
Minimum Education: Associates Degree Required, or successful completion of US military BMET training program Required
Degree: Degree in Electronics Preferred
License/Certification Required: BMET Certification required, or US military BMET certification required
Minimum Work Experience: 5 years experience in a clinical setting required

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains medical computer hardware, operating systems and software to ensure availability and reliability of service. Configures and installs medical devices, PC's and peripherals as standalone devices or on medical networks correctly.
  • Reviews and analyzes the effectiveness and efficiency of existing medical systems and develops strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems. Assists in coordinating or performing in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new medical systems.
  • Assists in incident investigations: Correctly evaluates the incident and equipment involved. Works efficiently to determine the root cause of the incident, which may involve comprehension and evaluation of factors concerning patients, supplies, and equipment. Provides training and additional recommendations to the user. Provides recommendation and incident reporting the manufacturer. Proactively and systematically creates processes and/or procedures to avoid similar issues in the future.
  • Responsible for system upgrades regarding medical hardware and software. Evaluates new medical equipment for purchase, making recommendations based on technical expertise. Performs initial acceptance inspections on new clinical equipment.
  • Directly responsible for maintenance, installation, and monitoring the hospital's medical networks for performance and reliability. Provides all aspects of project management for a variety of need-based projects, as assigned.
  • Network Troubleshooting: Provides network expertise in the area of network support and implementation of hospital medical networks as required: Determines wireless network transmitter status within medical devices and repairs or replaces as necessary. Determines wireless access points are functioning, load distribution is appropriate within medical networks, and repaired or replaced, as necessary. Determines medical network switches and nodes are wired and functioning correctly; repairs and replaces as necessary. Verifies or assigns IP address to network devices within the medical networks.
  • Provides complete and thorough user support for problem resolution: Resolves issues with medical devices and medical PC hardware and software. Resolves issues with medical hardware and software related issues.
  • Provides technology support as needed in a courteous manner: Provides advanced operating system support for DOS, Windows 95 - Windows 7, Windows Server and Linux, as required. Provides new medical technology support as needed.
  • Recommends operational techniques and methodologies which insure full use of medical devices. Consults with departments regarding their needs for medical technology and provides expert advice and planning.
  • Completes hand written and computerized equipment documentation for work performed regarding medical device recalls, routine repairs and preventative maintenance, purchasing parts and supplies, and both medical and non-medical related projects thoroughly and concisely.

  • Parts Inventory: Maintains parts inventory at specified levels: Identifies high failure rate components and parts within medical devices, systems and sub-systems and networks. Orders and stocks parts identified at appropriate levels so medical devices, computers and networks may be repaired and returned to service quickly. Enters parts into the parts database table along with pricing and quantity. Enters parts used correctly into medical equipment work order database for automatic part inventory tracking. Looks for cost saving means by second sourcing components, systems, and sub-systems as available.
  • Maintains and performs necessary procedures in the event of medical system failures.
  • Coordinates outside vendor service when necessary, including warranty services and services on proprietary systems and subsystems without technical documentation.
  • Maintains current technical expertise in the rapidly changing technology of medical devices and microcomputers and utilizes state-of-the-art techniques when implementing solutions.
  • Assists in coordinating and/or provides training for appropriate personnel to ensure medical devices are used effectively.
  • Participates in department development suggesting policy changes, improving customer service, developing more efficient procedures, and all other activities that will improve the overall efficiency and customer services of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
