DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
HOURS : 18-28 per week
MIN. AGE : 16 years
GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
This is routine work maintaining books and other collections of the library and providing general assistance to patrons. The work involves a variety of repetitive tasks including shelving of books and other library materials, processing and repair of returned items and checking materials in and out at a circulation desk. The work is performed at the central municipal public library or a branch library under the supervision of a professional librarian or clerical supervisor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : (Employee must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Sorts and interfiles books and materials on shelves, book carts or in file drawers maintaining alphabetic, numeric or other order sequence as appropriate.
  • Operates library's computer system and related data entry devices including keyboard and scanning device to check circulating items in and out and to register patrons for library cards.
  • Transports materials within library using book cart; pushes, pulls, bends, reaches, kneels, lifts, carries, grasps and uses step stools as needed in performing the work.
  • Provides assistance to adult and children patrons in person and by telephone; answers basic operational and directional questions, and provides basic instruction on the use of library equipment including public computers.
  • Maintains the condition of library materials; repairs and replaces book jackets, cleans discs, affixes labels and inserts security targets as needed.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Training or experience in library work, typing and computers preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office products preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and deal tactfully and courteously with children and adult patrons.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn assigned tasks readily, adhere to prescribed routine and work independently on regular assignments.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to comply with Library policies and procedures including standards for attire.
  • Ability to perform repetitive bending, to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. and to push and pull fully loaded carts of books and library materials.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
EXAMINATION PROCEDURE :
  • Clerical skills test
  • Departmental interview upon referral for vacancy
