Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Software/Principal Software Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Melbourne, FL.
This role will be supporting the development of virtual reality training solutions, Virtual Maintenance Trainer (VMT) and Virtual Reality (VR) Development. These solutions entail creating and conducting training programs using virtual or computer-based simulations to train maintenance personnel.
The VR Software Engineer will join the Immersive Technology Development Team that designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs our training content containing logical and mathematical solutions for military 3D game-based training. Our VR Software Engineer determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities, output requirements, input data acquisition, and programming techniques. The ideal candidate must be highly familiar with the Unity game engine and the coding structures used including design patterns (like singletons, observers, and state machines), sequencing patterns, decoupling and optimizations in C#. This role will also be responsible for the hiring and training of additional future roles.
This position is currently unfunded and contingent upon award.
Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with the existing team to lead the code-based design architecture on things like UIs, extending the OpenXR code package, and support the creation of new pipelines as technology and customer requirements change.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to other team members as appropriate.
- Develop C# code, test code, fix bugs, profile and optimize code to meet deliverable requirements.
- Develop custom editor tools to increase team efficiency and create related training/user guides in Markdown when needed.
- Follow best practices, development processes, and coding standards while also raising awareness and standards of the existing team.
- Create automated toolsets (Jenkins/other) for testing code.
- A self-starter who takes ownership of their work and can prioritize tasks for the team best efficiency.
This position may be filled at a Level 2 or a Level 3 based on the qualifications outlined below.
Basic Qualifications:
Software Engineer Level-2:
- Bachelor's of Science in Degree in a STEM discipline field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with at least 2 years' experience in Aerospace, Aviation, Systems Engineering, and Manufacturing or Production; OR Master's Degree in a STEM discipline with 0 years' experience.
- Experience successfully completing projects (initiation, planning, execution to completion).
- US Citizenship required.
- Although not required to start, the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance and Special Program Access is required.
- Experience with Immersive Technologies (VR, AR, other).
Principal Software Engineer Level-3:
- Bachelor's of Science Degree in a STEM discipline field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with at least 5 years' experience in Aerospace, Aviation, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing or Production; OR Master's Degree in a STEM discipline with at least 3 years' experience in Aerospace, Aviation, Systems Engineering, and Manufacturing or Production; or a PhD.
- Experience successfully completing projects (initiation, planning, execution to completion).
- US Citizenship required.
- Although not required to start, the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance and Special Program Access is required.
- Experience with Immersive Technologies (VR, AR, other).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the Software Development Life Cycle using the Agile processes with Atlassian products and version control (Jira, Bitbucket).
- Experience with extending existing code, multi-player, complex decision-trees/state machines, and developing editor tools.
- Relevant Unity Certifications (Unity Certified Professional Programmer or Certified Expert Programmer).
- Experienced in developing code in a military or defense environment.
- Experience with 3D simulations/physics engines.
- Experience with portfolio of past projects or example projects.
- Experience with backend code for store fronts similar to the Unity Asset Store.
- Strong usability and testing skills.
- Active DoD Secret Clearance.

Salary Range: $73,400 - $110,000
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
