Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for leading and managing the nursing department, ensuring the highest degree of quality patient care in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and standards. This position demands a professional with a passion for patient care, a keen understanding of the nuances of a skilled nursing facility, and an ability to adapt to the unique requirements of a rural setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership & Management: Direct, oversee, and evaluate all nursing personnel. Encourage and foster a collaborative environment among staff members.

  2. Clinical Excellence: Ensure that the highest possible quality of nursing care is delivered to patients consistently. Monitor patient care for compliance with established standards and regulations.

  3. Regulatory Compliance: Remain updated with local, state, and federal regulations. Ensure the facility is prepared for state health inspections and other reviews.

  4. Staff Development: Implement ongoing education and training programs for nursing staff. Encourage professional growth among the team.

  5. Budgeting & Resource Management: Oversee nursing department budgets and ensure adequate staffing and resources.

  6. Planning: Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.

  7. Interdepartmental Coordination: Work closely with other facility departments to ensure integrated patient care and efficient operation of the facility.

  8. Patient & Family Communication: Serve as a key point of contact for patient families, addressing concerns and ensuring satisfaction.

  9. Quality Improvement: Regularly review patient outcomes and service efficiency, implementing improvements as needed.

  10. Risk Management: Identify potential risks and establish protocols to minimize liabilities.

  11. Community Involvement: Represent the facility in community events and health programs. Foster relationships within the local community to understand and accommodate the unique needs of the rural setting.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  1. Valid California RN license.
  2. BSN required, MSN or related advanced degree preferred.
  3. Minimum of 7 years experience in a senior nursing role in a skilled nursing, critical access, or similar facility.
  4. Demonstrated leadership abilities and effective team management.
  5. Proficient in nursing care regulatory standards and compliance requirements.
  6. Strong clinical, organizational, and administrative skills.
  7. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  8. Proficiency in electronic health record systems and other relevant software.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  2. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  3. May be required to assist with resident transfers and occasional lifting.
