The Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) was established in 1948 to receive, manage, and disburse private gifts in support of Virginia Tech programs. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation governed by its board of directors. The Foundation serves the university by generating funding from private sources and aggressively managing its assets to provide funding which supplements state appropriations. The Foundation provides additional operating support to colleges and departments, assists in the funding of major building projects, and provides seed capital for new university initiatives.

Position Summary:

As a member of the investment team, the Investment Manager will participate in all aspects of investing in an institutional investment portfolio. The position is well suited for self-starters who bring an independent mindset and work well independently. The Investment Manager will work under the supervision of the Managing Director but will be expected to collaborate with the entire investment team and the wider VTF organization. The position is located onsite in Richmond, VA.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • With a focus on public market investment strategies, conduct due diligence on prospective investment managers, including analysis and preparation of investment memos.
  • Maintain coverage of assigned investment managers and provide input into the portfolio management process.
  • Conduct investment research and projects to support the investment process.
  • Attend investment conferences, capital introduction events, and other industry events as a representative of the investment team.
  • Contribute insights and perspectives as it relates to the overall management of the portfolio.
  • Assist with maintaining data files, operational tasks, reporting, and the production of Investment Committee materials.
  • Network with peers and other industry participants to stay abreast of current investment opportunities and best practices.

Qualifications:

  • 7 to 10 years of investment experience, preferably within an institutional environment such as an endowment, foundation, OCIO, or family office.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree or CFA preferred.
  • Advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Prior experience working across functional lines, primarily as it relates to operations, legal, and finance.
  • Bring a strong network of peers and other industry participants.
  • Must hold oneself and others accountable and strive for a high level of excellence
  • Experience investing across public market strategies, including long-only equities, fixed income, and hedge funds.
  • Past success independently sourcing ideas, managing workflow, and building consensus within a collaborative environment.
  • Prior exposure to organization-wide collaboration as it relates to operations, reporting, legal, audit, and other supporting activities.
