The Caseworker - Generalist provides comprehensive case management services to asylum seekers within the NYC Asylee Flex Program. This role involves conducting assessments, developing individualized service plans, and coordinating services to support the needs and goals of asylum seekers. The Caseworker- Generalist must live within a 50-mile radius of the New York City metropolitan area.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct intake assessments to determine the needs and goals of asylum seekers.
- Develop and implement individualized service plans in collaboration with asylum seekers.
- Ability to utilize effective case management techniques, such as Motivational Interviewing, Psychological First Aid, Client and Trauma-Informed Care, use of verbal de-escalation techniques, and how to incorporate strength-based and solution-focused services.
- Strong ability to research and establish community resources useful to asylees.
- Coordinate with service providers to ensure asylum seekers receive necessary services that may include housing accoutrements, medical care, legal assistance, and social services.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all case management activities in the database.
- Ensure compliance with program policies and procedures, including safeguarding sensitive information.
- Conduct regular follow-up meetings with asylum seekers to monitor progress and update service plans as needed.
- Advocate on behalf of asylum seekers to ensure they receive appropriate services and support.
- Ability to demonstrate cultural competence, inclusivity and sensitivity (e.g. trauma-informed care, emotional intelligence, shelter experience/background working with vulnerable populations such as asylees, refugees, and unhoused individuals)
- Ability to remain calm and composed under stress.
- Provide crisis intervention and support as needed.
- Participate in regular team meetings and case conferences to review cases and ensure coordination of services.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all program policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or other relevant degree from an accredited institution.
- At least 2 years of progressive case management experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other common office equipment.
- Strong organizational abilities, outstanding writing and verbal communication skills, and the capacity to multitask.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with asylum seekers, refugees, unhoused or other vulnerable populations.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (Read, Write, and Speak) highly preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to ascend/descend stairs.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
- Visual acuity required to complete paperwork and computer work.
