Forklift Operator

Overview:

Operates standard and/or specialized Material Handling Equipment (MHE). Operates equipment to move, load, unload, stack and unstack various bin, intermediate, bulk, hazardous stock and equipment. May work in either an automated or non-automated warehouse, or open storage, or receiving or shipping area. May use automated equipment such as computer terminals, bar code wands, and laser scanning equipment to read, store, query, route, and track data. Operator must be able to obtain MHE license and maintain proficiency to operate equipment. Must be familiar with the day to day operation and documents generated by DSS. Loads, unloads, and moves materials within or near warehouse or work site by performing the following duties.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Operator must be able to obtain MHE license and maintain proficiency to operate equipment.
  • Reads work order or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • May be assigned to receiving, shipping, storage or issue areas.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, conveyors, and shelves by hand or through use of MHE.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated areas.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet as required.
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers.
  • Loads truck for Industrial Truck Operator.
  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together.
  • Lifts objects by hand or with power hoist, and cleans work area, machines, and equipment to assist machine operators.
  • Operates industrial truck, warehouse tractor, electric or gas engine cart or electric hoist to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Operates warehouse sweeper as necessary to ensure cleanliness of storage areas.
  • Perform all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Must have High School Diploma or GED (May substitute experience for education on a year-by-year basis).
  • A minimum of one year of related general experience and/or training including demonstrated knowledge.
  • Specific experience of one year minimum is required of the type noted in Specific Skills, Knowledge and Abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Suite of products including, Word, Excel, Access and E-mail business software.
  • Must demonstrate a good attitude and ability to work as a member of a Team.
  • Position requires self-motivation and the ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to multi-task efficiently, work in a fast paced environment on multiple projects, and have a strong attention for detail.

Security Clearance:

SECRET Level Required

  • Must have a current US Government SECRET Personnel Security Clearance or be able to successfully complete a U.S. government administered Investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must also be able to maintain a US Government SECRET clearance.

The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Works in shop/warehouse environment. Work involves repetitive motions and standing for long periods of time. Work is of a physical nature and requires the incumbent be able to lift 50 lbs overhead and/or repetitively. Outside work in hot and cold or wet weather is occasionally required.
