The SER T&D NIA Business Line Manager will provide overall leadership, vision, and managerial direction for establishing Burns & McDonnell’s position within the regional NIA Market.

This position will have primary accountability for all project management and business development within the SER NIA Market. This position will work closely with several other managers within SER and the overall NIA leadership team including:

  • Operations Director – responsible for internal department personnel, operations, and coordination with section and department manager(s) throughout SER T&D.
  • NIA Managing Director – responsible for overall NIA national practice.
  • NIA Department Managers – accountable for staffing/career development of all design and engineering resources within SER NIA and direct supervision over Project Engineers in the department.
  • Design Technology Department Managers – accountable for staffing/career development of all design and engineering resources within SER Design Technology and direct supervision over Designers in these department.
  • Program Manager – accountable for staffing/career development of all personnel supporting program management.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

Safety:

  • Adherence and promotion of Burns & McDonnell’s safety programs, training, and policies for all NIA projects and well as the promotion and management of the Safety & Health performance of the project team members.

Business Development:

  • Identification and pursuit of NIA opportunities for the Southeast Region including associated Branch offices.
  • Establishing Burns & McDonnell’s position in the regional NIA Market through strategic planning and business plan development with a focus on continued growth in Market share, profitable growth, and a great work environment.
  • Providing overall oversight and direction for the business development of the Southeast Region NIA Markets. Work with the appropriate personnel to lead the development and administration of the SER NIA Business Plan.
  • Oversee the development of strong, work-winning relationships with key NIA stakeholders at current and prospective clients.
  • Lead the development and diversification of the SER NIA Markets, including beyond T&D-owned clients and into other Global Practices’ clients through cross-selling efforts.
  • Oversee the development of SER NIA work with new clients as well as the expansion of SER NIA work with existing clients.
  • Provide oversight for the pursuit process including “go/no-go” decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, development of pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.
  • Direct QC process to monitor the development of scopes of work, schedules and budgets during the pursuit process.
  • Ensure alignment and support of regional office proposal efforts and risk assessments.
  • Provide senior-level technical advice regarding execution of engineering projects to the project execution teams.
  • Other business development duties as assigned.

Personnel:

  • Maintain a forecast of workload and required skillsets and support the Operations Director and relevant personnel managers on recruitment and development of staff needed to achieve that and grow NIA.
  • Recruitment and Development of center of excellence leads for individual NIA Market segments.
  • Work with personnel managers of all departments contributing to the NIA Business Line to identify gaps in skillsets and/or levels such that they can hire and structure their respective departments to allow for realizing the Business Line Manager’s vision and for the pursuit of all viable opportunities in the region. Coordinate with Director of Business to drive the training and development of project management, business development, and client management skillsets within the team.
  • Recruitment and development of NIA project-managers-in-training and project managers.
  • Management and career development of NIA project management personnel. Accountable for the development of leadership within the NIA project management group and for assisting with the overall leadership development within the office. In coordination with the Director of Operations, provide oversight and direction for Project Managers to invest appropriately in their project teams’ personnel to maximize employee-owner career development, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Facilitate a thriving work environment that facilitates the recruitment, development, and retainment of the Market’s top-talent.
  • Conduct mid-year and annual performance evaluations for direct reports and participate in evaluations of other staff as required.
  • Other personnel duties as assigned.

Project Management Leadership:

  • Identify and oversee implementation of effective change management practices on projects. Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
  • Attend, actively engage, and provide guidance in all NIA Q1 and Q2 meetings.
  • Overall identification and implementation of project management methods, procedures, tools, and technology to win new work and to execute existing work more profitably.
  • In coordination with relevant Department Managers, provide support and direction for all SER NIA engineering projects including the project management, project planning, scheduling, resource management, budgeting, and the establishment/execution of critical project objectives. Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Responsible for the profitability and financial performance of the SER NIA projects portfolio. Includes oversight and identification of NIA project and portfolio risks and the administration of the associated mitigation strategies to provide for a portfolio of work that meets or exceeds set goals.
  • Provide leadership to the project management team; direct and coordinate assignments and activities of several disciplines ensuring efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Conduct recurring project reviews to identify execution risks and review financial performance and resources.
  • Provide senior-level engineering and project management expertise to guide project managers in executing engineering projects.
  • Establish effective policies and procedures that promote project success, including on-time delivery, client satisfaction, quality and profitability.
  • Ensure that client diversity goals and initiatives are met.
  • Ensure that project managers understand and follow the Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program for all projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Collaboration:

  • Facilitate collaboration with branch and other regional offices to coordinate business plans and assist in the pursuit of NIA opportunities.
  • Support the NIA Section/Department Manager and any BMI liaisons, as applicable in the development and leveraging of a strong ‘Burns and McDonnell India’ team dedicated to the support of SER NIA Projects.
  • Work with the Business Development and Account Management personnel for the development and administration of client and project capture plans.
  • Coordinate with the NIA team to support the development of EPC and Program Management opportunities within the SER NIA Market.
  • Act as a leader in the advancement and development of innovative department tools and workflows to increase department efficiencies and promote the adoption and use of technology tools across all NIA project teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in engineering, business or related degree from an accredited program and 7 years relevant consulting experience, preferably in the transmission and distribution industry with a transmission engineering design and/or project management focus required.
  • Demonstrated results in client and business development.
  • Demonstrated results in managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.
  • Expert facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated success as to budget, savings and/or profit margins in completed projects.
  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.
  • Excellent planning and analytical skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Expert knowledge of project management methodologies and tools including the use of Microsoft Project or equivalent - Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
  • Experience in contract negotiations.
