ICE is seeking an experienced Transportation Engineer to join our Virginia-based team, with the possibility of remote work for a self-motivated individual who values independence. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of experience working on Design-Bid-Build projects with extensive knowledge of VDOT design practices. The Engineer will play a crucial role in designing and managing infrastructure projects while ensuring that the infrastructure designs meet technical and safety standards, budget, and timeline constraints.

Position Summary

The Transportation Engineer is responsible for the collection and analysis of data for the preparation of road and highway designs. Will perform roadway and highway design calculations, conduct investigative analyses toward completion of assigned design tasks, and direct the preparation of design drawings and/or specifications. Job duties include roadway/surface design utilizing AASHTO and other applicable design specifications as well as state and local design requirements. Job duties also include working with designers on isometric designs, assisting project managers with design review and permitting and evaluating proposed opportunities, and advancing proposal efforts on behalf of the company.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop effective/innovative designs for interstate widening, interchange/intersection improvements, traffic management, and roadway drainage design on State and County highway improvement projects.
  • Assist in new business development by contributing to strategic planning, and marketing, and assisting with proposals and business operations planning.
  • Provide coordination of project execution and control on roadway design projects to achieve continuity of purpose within scope, budget, and time schedules from initial start-up through final design.
  • Coordinate with the project team, contractors, vendors, and other consultants to ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, specifications, and design requirements.
  • Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD, AASHTO, AREMA, and VDOT design criteria/specifications.
  • Provide internal quality control for construction drawings, design calculations, and specifications to ensure technical accuracy, conformance to project requirements, and overall constructability.
  • Work with Project Management to ensure projects are completed on schedule and under budget. Must be able to independently manage project tasks.
  • Maintain organized documentation/archives of design files, drawings, and construction submittals.
  • Proactively communicate with clients, environmental agencies, and federal entities on the implications of the construction.
  • Provide construction assistance and respond to Requests for Information (RFI’s) as necessary.

Position Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field required; master’s degree desired.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in Virginia required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with large heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with computer programs such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ProjectWise, Open Roads, or similar type programs desired.
  • Advanced knowledge of VDOT Design Practices is required.
  • A valid Driver's License is required with a safe driving record and must complete a pre-employment screening.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Physical Demands

While working in the office, this position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. Must have visual acuity to recognize/change/add precise details on CAD drawings. During fieldwork, the position entails moderate physical exertion, encompassing walking, standing, bending, and ascending stairs or ladders. The employee may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Fieldwork exposes inspectors to various environmental conditions, including but not limited to loud noise levels, dust, dirt, and temperature fluctuations. Inspectors must adeptly navigate construction sites and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.

Expected Hours of Work

This position is full-time (40 hours per week). Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing one unpaid hour for lunch each day. While overtime is generally not anticipated, occasional projects or deadlines may necessitate additional hours, compensated according to company policy. Flexible schedules may be available with prior approval from the immediate supervisor. Work schedules may vary based on project demands.
