The Health Educator will work with the Outreach and Engagement Unit to update and create educational curricula to increase community preparedness and resilience. The Health Educator should be familiar with priority communities and be able to integrate concepts of health, public health and structural inequity that lead to disparate health outcomes. The Health Educator should be experienced with plain-language communication and be comfortable accurately communicating public health and health-related concepts to a variety of audiences, both internally with staff and externally with the public.
This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional work after hours and on weekends, as well as regular field work, to support outreach initiatives and other Program activities. This is a grant-funded position; continuation of the position is contingent upon sustained funding.
This is not remote work. The applicant will work from the Health Department offices or other locations as assigned. This job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position requires responding to public health emergencies on short notice, deployment to field sites, and some after-hours activities to achieve Program objectives.
This position reports to the Community Engagement Supervisor.
*Responsibilities:

  • Develop educational curricula for public-facing trainings and educational materials on key preparedness topic areas such as extreme heat, severe storms, infectious diseases, and other emergent and ongoing public health hazards affecting the people of Philadelphia.
  • Develop an all-hazards curriculum inclusive of training materials, facilitation guides, and evaluation tools.
o Establish seasonal workshop schedules to be incorporated into Program’s Community Engagement Plan.
o Analyze evaluation data to inform curriculum revisions and updates.
o Identify optimal partner agencies for curriculum development or delivery.
o Work with Content Creator to develop and edit content for public-facing materials.
o Deliver preparedness trainings to partner organizations and the public.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners as needed to highlight the health impacts of public health emergencies.
  • Administer virtual or in-person community trainings. This will require regular time out in the community as well as some after-hours work.
  • Develop a neighborhood resource guide to better inform outreach staff of the social, economic, demographic, health and other contexts about the competing crises and priorities the communities staff work in are currently experiencing or have experienced historically.
  • Develop and implement an internal training curriculum to improve knowledge among outreach unit staff in key public health and preparedness topic areas, so they are better informed in their outreach and engagement roles.
  • Develop and implement educational curricula to target community education to priority population groups and specific public health hazards, relevant to the city of Philadelphia.
  • Support implementation of other outreach initiatives and field activities, such as canvassing and community events.
  • Identify, manage, and evaluate special projects pertaining to addressing needs within specific populations or geographic areas.
  • Contribute to management of outreach unit inventory, including identifying event supplies.
  • Participate in Public Health Preparedness program activities, including trainings, exercises, and emergency responses.
  • Serve as a core member of the response team for the Department for a variety of emergencies.

*Skills:

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
*Experience:
  • Clinical background a plus.
  • 2 or more years of experience working on public health or community health education.
*Education Requirement:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, education, communications, nursing or related field.
Salary:
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package consisting of medical and dental coverage, paid sick, vacation, and personal time.
Salary: $55,000 - $60,000
