EMH&T is seeking a History/Architecture Consultant on a full-time or part-time basis to support work from our office in Columbus, Ohio. The position will work closely with EMH&T’s environmental and cultural resources staff to support EMH&T’s cultural resource practice. The successful candidate will complete all levels of history/architecture surveys and related documents; assist and advise project managers; and develop and maintain agency and client relationships.
This position can be either full-time or part-time to accommodate the candidate’s desired schedule. In-person work is optional.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of this position will be to serve as a technical lead for history/architecture (H/A) surveys. This will include overseeing the planning and implementation of surveys with the help of EMH&T’s project managers; coordinating with clients and government agencies (e.g., Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and other SHPOs); training/mentoring junior staff; and overseeing and ensuring technical accuracy of field investigations, documents, and report writing. Projects may range from small, local surveys to large, out-of-state projects.
Other responsibilities and expectations for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Perform H/A surveys, including research, site inspections, condition assessments, and evaluations under the National Register of Historic Places.
- Analyze assessment findings, develop recommendations, and prepare historic structures reports, conservation plans, condition assessments, and related documents for client and agency review.
- Serve as lead author and reviewer of H/A surveys and reports, ensuring technical accuracy and quality of work products.
- Advise and consult with project managers to ensure project compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and associated federal and state regulations.
- Train/mentor junior staff in field investigations and technical write-ups.
- Frequent travel and work outdoors for extended periods under all weather conditions, sometimes in rugged terrain and conditions.
- Help promote and maintain a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
- Communicate efficiently, both verbally and in written form.
Technical Qualifications
- Graduate degree (MA/MS or Ph.D.) in American architectural history, anthropology, architectural preservation, preservation planning, architecture, or a closely related field.
- Meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications for History, Architectural History, Architecture, Historic Architecture, or Historic Preservation Planning.
- Experience and ability to complete H/A surveys for a variety of clients and sectors.
- Strong working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106, Section 110), National Environmental Policy Act, and associated federal and state laws and regulations.
- Minimum of five years demonstrated full-time experience as a preservation architect/historian conducting historic research, preparing surveys, and writing reports for architectural preservation, historic structures, and facility analyses.
- Must be a strong technical writer with a minimum of five years of experience as a lead author on H/A surveys (if selected for an interview, a writing sample may be requested).
- Knowledge of preservation, historic construction, and restoration techniques and policies.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and respond quickly while working in the field or office.
- Ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with clients, budget tracking, supervising staff, and overseeing field work and report writing.
- Ability to independently plan and organize work to meet fast-paced deadlines.
- Must be attentive to organization, detail, and accuracy.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with engineers, environmental scientists, cultural resources professionals and archaeologists, and other technical specialists as part of a large, multi-disciplinary project team.
Preferred Qualifications
- ODOT Prequalification in History/Architectural Investigations
- Qualified on the Ohio SHPO History/Architecture Consultants List
- Professional accreditation, e.g., Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA)
Physical Requirements
The work may be physically demanding and work environments described here are representative of those that an employee in the above-listed position(s) will encounter and must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Use of electronic standard desktop and portable office equipment.
- The ability to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor insects, poisonous plants, and allergens for extended periods of time (8-10 hours per day throughout the year).
- The ability to walk for extended periods of time and the ability to maneuver over rough terrain, ditches, steep banks, and uneven ground.
- Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
- Intermittent squatting, leaning, twisting, and bending.
- Use of hand equipment or tools.
- Must pass a pre-employment background and drug screen.
