Job Description
The Director of Development will serve as a critical leader on the development team. The main areas of focus will be stewardship and collaboration in our: mid-major donor program, faith community program, and local and national events. He/she will be tasked with prospecting, cultivating, and growing relationships and resources with local and national household donors, business leaders, and faith communities. This candidate must be highly relational and have a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising or direct sales. Strategically overseeing a portfolio of relationships, the candidate will raise funding to fuel the programmatic work of The Exodus Road globally and in the United States. In addition to engaging in fundraising activities, this position will represent TER's mission publicly in a variety of venues. Working in collaboration in a team environment, he/she will significantly grow the organization's resources and influence with measurable impact.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Leverage and engage current key household relationships while focusing on the research, development and execution of new/improved key donor opportunities and stewardship processes
  • Build and sustain relationships that energize and motivate funders and community partners to become sustainable givers, while following a strategic stewardship and moves management plan
  • Engage often in fundraising calls and meetings for the purpose of making direct asks to increase revenue pipelines, support campaigns, and fund the mission
  • Lead proposal development and creation of pitch decks, marketing collateral, and strategy documents for prospective philanthropic partners
  • Utilize a donor management system (Virtuous) to gather research on prospective partners, track activity, and generate revenue and donor reporting
  • Collaborate, implement, and manage a comprehensive strategic development plan for organizational charitable giving to TER with a strong sense of value-add and longevity to the partnering organization, including those in the faith community
  • Retain, grow, and manage relationships with sponsors for events, driving deepened engagement with TER
  • Represent TER publicly and professionally in networking, fundraising, or donor events
  • Work alongside our events team for strategic real-life connection to our donor community
  • Develop and engage with faith-based organizations that support TER, growing financial giving, engagement and awareness in the faith community
  • Provide consistent feedback to leadership on ways to strengthen our development of partners and key households for long-term sustainability and quality relationships that promote partnership and generosity
  • Serve on and steward a segmented list of household donors in support of the Major Gifts Team, following a strategic engagement plan
  • Occasionally travel for in-person meetings or events in other states, with a weekly schedule full of out-of-office meetings locally
  • Innovate new ways to increase revenue while working with the TER fundraising and leadership team to implement
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Proven successful track record in raising capital, direct sales, or donor stewardship
  • 10+ years experience in one or more of the following areas: nonprofit development, charitable fundraising, donor relations, direct sales, and/or successful entrepreneurship
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Exceptional relationship and interpersonal skills, with a natural tendency to connect meaningfully and inspire engagement to a cause
  • The ability to effectively speak publicly is desired, but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships and build strong rapport and trust with partners and teammates from diverse backgrounds
  • A track record of exceptional customer service and strong problem-solving
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data and information from multiple sources and develop comprehensive recommendations
  • An effective storyteller who consistently and clearly communicates both verbally and in writing in a compelling, professional manner
  • Comfortable juggling multiple stakeholders' requests while driving deliverables simultaneously and often on an accelerated timeline
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality, tact, and independence
  • Sound judgment; ability to represent The Exodus Road externally with integrity, passion, and professionalism
  • A positive team player who demonstrates an enthusiasm for connecting people, encouraging generosity, and inspiring change
  • Passion to fight human trafficking and exemplifying the core values of The Exodus Road - mission, excellence, grit, integrity, innovation, community, empowerment, and hope.
  • Strong technology skills, especially in working with CRM donor systems. Experience with Virtuous is a plus.
What Does Success Look Like?:
  • 1st 90-Days: Completed accelerated learning plan that includes (1) mastery of core organizational stories, (2) ability to speak confidently and passionately about current programs and impact, (3) competency on all systems and processes, (4) established rapport with an assigned portfolio of key stakeholders, (5) progress towards key organizational fundraising goals and strategy.
  • 6-Month Mark: Clearly contributing value to the organization and the Development team through leadership, existing donor engagement, new donor development, and revenue generation.
  • End of 1st Year: Net positive income generation (compared to employer costs) that can be traced to the Director's direct fundraising contributions.
