Job Description
Overview:
International SOS is seeking Sterile Processing Service (SPS) Technicians (also known as Medical Supply Technicians) to support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program at Phoenix VAHCS. The selected candidates will represent International SOS and perform a variety of sterilization, processing, decontamination, surgical/dental tray assembly, flexible endoscope reprocessing, reusable inventory, medical equipment processing, and quality assurance functions. The role may require working days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
Technicians must possess and apply knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications to their daily work practices, including:
  • Understanding and applying the theory, principles, practice, and techniques of asepsis to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Practical knowledge of microbiology as it relates to surgical supply operations, particularly concerning microorganism resistance to heat and chemicals used for sterilization and High-Level Disinfection (HLD).
  • Proficiency in standard procedures for steam autoclaving and chemical sterilization (e.g., Sterrad).
  • Familiarity with HLD systems such as Medivator Advantage, Trophon, and manual HLD utilizing Cidex OPA.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical supplies, instruments, equipment, and their specific cleaning, sterilizing, and storage requirements.
  • Ability to identify damaged or broken instruments and find suitable replacements.
  • Thorough familiarity with hospital Operating Room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
  • Understanding of aseptic principles and techniques, including characteristics of various detergents and cleaning techniques.
  • Proficiency in the handling, cleaning, and reprocessing of flexible endoscopes such as colonoscopes and gastroscopes.
  • Ability to follow detailed manufacturer instructions for handling, cleaning, and sterilizing or HLD processing of a wide variety of surgical and clinical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME)
Qualifications
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
  • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA).
  • Graduation from a nationally recognized CRCST training program with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work in the field.
  • Graduation from a nationally recognized Operating Room Technician training program with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
  • Graduation from a US military training program for Surgical Technicians with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
  • VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years of current work experience in the SPS environment.
  • Non-certified technicians with a minimum of 5 years of documented and verifiable SPS hands-on work experience.
Educational Requirements:
  • An Associate or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Work involves prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
  • May require bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Repetitive tasks for 8 hours.
  • Wearing PPE for 8 hours.
Other Special Qualifications:
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Must relocate to the project site for the duration of the contract.
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
Note on Scheduling:
Contract Sterile Processing Service Technicians shall be available Monday through Sunday with five possible Tours of Duty:
  • Tour 1: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Tour 2: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
  • Tour 3: 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm
  • Tour 4: 3:30 pm - 12:00 am
  • Tour 5: 9:00 pm - 5:30 am

Compensation/ Min: $28.72/hr - $35.00/hr
Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant's background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
