Base Salary: $70,000 - $80,000
On-target Earnings: $90,000 - $100,000
70% Base – 30% Commission

Ocient is a venture-funded startup building a SQL compliant, exabyte-scale, high-performance data platform. It is a distributed system optimized for NVMe drives, RDMA networks and high core count processors. We are led by a management team with seven successful startup exits, including Cleversafe which was one of the largest software startup exits in Chicago's history.
Overview
As a Business Development Lead at Ocient, you will be responsible for researching, contacting and qualifying potential client opportunities for Ocient. Our ideal candidate is a self-starter and confident in their lead generation abilities. You are experienced at lead generation, in house, at a technology/software development corporation, or ideally at a database corporation. You are a leader who is comfortable acting as a mentor for your coworkers and helping them excel in their roles. Sales and Marketing automation tools are currently a part of your every day work and you are secure in your ability to learn new ones. You are good as an individual contributor, navigating setbacks through strategic and innovative thinking. You are also good in a team, open to collaboration and feedback.
Responsibilities
- Report to Director of Growth Marketing & Business Development, but work closely with other department members and Account Executives.
- Exceed provided qualified meetings, opportunity and bookings quota defined in your individual compensation plan.
- Demonstrate highly professional interactions with potential customers as their first introduction to Ocient.
- Research accounts and contacts for tradeshows, marketing, and business development campaigns using Ocient’s BDR tech stack including Salesforce CRM, HubSpot, SalesLoft, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, SalesIntel, etc.
- Identify key players and create targeted and personalized communication to generate interest in Ocient.
- Create and maintain a targeted account strategy for assigned territories and targets.
- Identify customer pain points using Ocient’s lead qualification criteria and assess needs against Ocient’s capabilities.
- Perform a balance of cold calling, email sequencing and LinkedIn outreach.
- Participate in internal meetings with sales, marketing, product and more to ensure cross collaboration, aligned goals and stay abreast of company initiatives and updates.
- Maintain clean and accurate reporting of activities, meetings booked and notes in Salesforce CRM.
- Continually develop personal selling skills, acquire industry knowledge, and broaden expertise in Ocient’s offerings.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field preferred: Business Administration (Sales, Management, Marketing); Information Technology; Cloud; AI/ML; Data Warehouses/Databases.
- 3+ years of experience as an in-house seller or business development rep of technology/software, or ideally databases and data warehouses.
- Salesforce/CRM/HubSpot and sales engagement platform (Outreach, SalesLoft) experience required.
- Experience as a mentor or leader is preferred.
- Enthusiastic learner with entrepreneurial spirit and positive attitude.
- Excellent listening and verbal/written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow directions carefully.
- Ability to nurture professional relationships as well as work cross-collaboratively internally.
