Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a responsible Senior Civil Engineer to join the System Operations, Planning, and Analysis (SOPA) Wastewater Operations Team that manages operations and optimization of existing and future wastewater facilities, such as the Ship Canal Water Quality CSO Storage tunnel, through collaboration with operations & maintenance, instrumentation & control, and engineering staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess the performance of SPU's wastewater systems which includes operable and passive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) facilities, wastewater pump stations, and flow control structures.
  • Provide an operational system perspective, represent operational needs, and serve as a SOPA point of contact during options analysis, design, construction, commissioning, stabilization, and operations of wastewater capital projects.
  • Provide operational support to Operations Control Center (OCC) staff to assist with proper response as issues arise, particularly in wet weather.
  • Provide annual facility refresher training to Utility Operations and Maintenance staff.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations, investigations with field reconnaissance, and analysis of the wastewater system.
  • Provide technical assistance to the monitoring and data stewardship programs.
  • Prepare, review, and update facility documentation such as Operations & Maintenance Manuals and Facility Operating Plans.
  • Perform post project performance monitoring and analysis. Prepare documentation for implementation of improvements.

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology is required.

Experience: Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer License: Must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Driver's License: A current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required.

Education and Experience Equivalency: In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited program, nine (9) years of relevant civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted. There is no equivalency for the PE license.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to provide 24/7 standby support on a rotational basis.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with operable facilities, preferably wastewater facilities.
  • Experience interpreting design and as-built drawings.
  • Technical understanding of wastewater system hydraulics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate openly, and coordinate efficiently, within a team environment.

The full salary range for this position is $66.70 - $77.67 Hourly.

Work Schedule: This position allows for the flexibility of a flexible work schedule. Beginning November 4, 2024, employees will be required to come into the office three times a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
