Primary Purpose:
To counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal and social abilities Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master's Degree
Valid school counseling certification or other credentials as required by Texas State Board for Educator Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling theory and procedures, student appraisal, and career development
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to present information in individual, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Preferred Experience:
At least two (2) years of teaching experience Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance:
  1. Delivers classroom guidance curriculum with the use of effective instructional skills and structured group sessions based on mandates and campus needs
  2. Takes an active role in communicating the comprehensive school counseling program to students, parents, staff, and the community at large
  3. Serves as a consultant to teachers who conduct lessons based on the school's/district's guidance and social and emotional learning (SEL) curricula
  4. Advises students and their guardians regarding the importance of postsecondary education

Responsive Services:
  1. Respects confidentiality
  2. Remains available to students, providing counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, interpersonal effectiveness, and maturity
  3. Counsels individuals and small groups using appropriate counseling theories and techniques in response to students' needs
  4. Coordinates resource referrals and follow-up procedures for students within the school and community
  5. Provides counseling to students who are targeted, bystanders, or alleged perpetrators of bullying if requested by parents or principals
Individual Planning:
  1. Monitors and provides support for students at risk of grade level retention
  2. Facilitates and coordinates parent conferences
  3. With the assistance of school staff, interprets standardized test results and other assessment data that assists students in exploring careers and making educational plans
System Support:
  1. Works closely with Advanced Academics Specialists to refer students for gifted and talented assessment and evaluation
  2. Maintains high visibility among faculty and student body
  3. Consults teachers, advisory boards or councils, support specialists, and other personnel and volunteers regarding the needs of the students and the comprehensive school counseling program
  4. Provides leadership and support for parent education programs and community relations efforts
  5. Uses data to show the impact of the school counseling program on student achievement, attendance, and behavior
Professional Growth and Development:
  1. Regularly attends Counseling and AVID department meetings
  2. Attends grief-informed and trauma-informed intervention training
  3. Seeks and attends training to develop the technology skills necessary to perform duties efficiently and effectively
  4. Engages in continuous learning through professional reflection and active collaboration with colleagues
  5. Remains current in the field by reading literature, attending professional meetings and conferences, and by discussing development and topics of mutual interest with others in the field of school counseling
  6. Performs all other duties as deemed necessary by the Chief of SEL and Post-Secondary Readiness or designee

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture/Motion: Sitting/standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; frequent walking
Lifting: Regular lifting and carrying (less than15 pounds)
Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); district and state-wide wide travel.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; occasional prolonged and/or irregular hours
