The Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center is seeking exceptional candidates to apply for the position of chief, Division of Veterans Affairs . We seek accomplished candidates with national prominence in the field of Anesthesiology, with deep commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce. Priority will be given to candidates with knowledge of the VA Health Care System, a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and/or grant funding. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Anesthesiology Service at the Durham VA Health Care System and advancing the department’s mission and vision through synergisms and collaborations between the Duke and VA health systems.

The Division of Veterans Affairs within Duke Anesthesiology staffs one of the leading Anesthesiology Services in the VA Health Care System. Our faculty provide comprehensive, cutting-edge care for complex patients in the operating room and non-operating room locations. The division is also responsible for directing and staffing the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation Clinic, a multidisciplinary Pain Clinic, and innovative pain initiatives such as the Transitional Pain Service and the Inpatient Pain Service. The team is also active in clinical and epidemiologic research and clinical education.

The Division Chief for Veterans Affairs will:

  • Lead the Anesthesiology Service at the Durham VA Health Care System, ensuring excellent patient care with a focus on outcomes.
  • Develop the strategic growth plans for the division and participate in health system and departmental initiatives.
  • Foster effective collaboration and coordination among Duke Health, the Duke School of Medicine, and the Veterans Affairs Health System.
  • Facilitate medical education for medical students, residents, and fellows in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.
  • Enhance faculty development opportunities, including recruitment and retention of engaged and diverse team members.
  • Lead innovative scholarship in anesthesiology, pain, perioperative, and critical care medicine.
  • Promote leading-edge research and cultivate an environment of academic curiosity and collaboration.
  • Prepare and coordinate as needed financial requests and contract information with the department’s Business Office, as well as manage division finances through acceptable Duke and Departmental accounting practices and policies.
