About the Job
The Access Specialist position works with students and staff to provide equitable access across campus and provides specialized assistance as required. This is a 100%, 12-months labor-represented continuing position (job class 1811, Office Support Assistant).
Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 physical access assistance for students and staff, as assigned.
- Assist navigation of inaccessible course content or materials.
- Fulfill note-taking and lab assistance requests.
- Proctor, scribe, and read exams as assigned in the Testing Center.
- Support Testing Coordinators' work and the Testing Center processes.
- Support with converting inaccessible materials.
- Train student employees.
- Attend DRC and OED all-staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Days: Monday to Friday with some evenings (and Saturdays during finals).
Pay Range: $21.63/hr - $25.25/hr
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED and one year of related office/clerical experience (some education can substitute for some of the experience).
- Ability to work with others.
- Attention to detail.
- Organizational skills.
- Flexible and accommodating.
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and listening).
- Able to maintain boundaries (i.e., when scribing and reading without tutoring, explaining, or coaching).
- Must be comfortable taking notes in class and working independently.
- Desire to work with students and staff members with a variety of disabilities.
- Familiarity with computers (both PC and Macintosh) and accompanying software applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with individuals who are blind or low vision.
- At least one semester of experience as an access assistant.
- Ability to learn new computer software quickly.
- Creative problem-solving skills.
- Background in math and/or science and/or computer science.
