Van Driver

Part time, Non-Exempt

$17.00 to $21.64 per hour

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for assisting patrons, by providing safe, courteous and timely van services to a variety of South Suburban Parks and Recreation programs in accordance with the District's policies and all driving laws. The position conducts inspections of the vehicle and performs necessary cleaning duties to ensure a safe, efficient and clean motor vehicle. The job may require shifts ranging from morning to evening hours and weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties:

  • Safely transport passengers to approved designated drop off & pick up points for a variety of programs via a van.

  • Promotes positive customer relations and interactions by greeting patrons in a pleasant and courteous manner.

  • Operates the van on schedule and within the designated route.

  • Regulates heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating systems, and radio for patron comfort.

  • Conducts pre-trip vehicle inspections; performs vehicle walk through and walk-arounds before and after each trip; checks fluids and tires on vehicle before starting. Conducts inspections after each operation to note damage or defects including body damage, tires, radiator, lights, instruments, brakes, radio and other equipment. Informs management as needed on all safety and maintenance issues.

  • Maintains a clean van both inside and outside; removes trash after each trip. Secures and turns in articles found in the van.

  • Exercise good judgment and practice proper safety precautions at all times. Reports accidents and hazards.

  • Assist with program leadership and supervision while on trip.

  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly. Completes Accident/Incident report.

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Previous experience driving in a public or private transportation role preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.

  • Possession of current certifications in CPR/AED required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local Government driving requirements and laws and work-place safety procedures and defensive driving techniques.

  • Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle and reading and understanding maps.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • Provide superior customer service and resolve customer complaints and escalated problems.

Material and Equipment Used:

Motor vehicles including and not limited to van; excluding vehicles holding more than 15 passengers. Personal computer, phone and other general office equipment.

Working Environment:

Regularly requires driving in a variety of weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscapes; regular exposure to adverse conditions such as dust, noise, and extremes in temperature. This will require negotiating streets with heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in all types of weather and lighting conditions

Physical Requirements:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to safely operate a motor vehicle; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, reach, twist and grasp, lift, carry, push, and/or pull/drag objects weighing up to 20 pounds. To operate assigned vehicles while exercising good hand/eye and foot/eye coordination; and to verbally communicate and exchange information, or hearing and listening for receiving and interpreting information and warning signals.
