Job Summary: The Lead Solutions Architect reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is responsible for designing technology solutions that align with an organization's strategic goals. This role involves collaborating with stakeholders to understand business requirements, assessing current systems and processes, and developing architectural frameworks that ensure scalability, security, and performance. You will create detailed blueprints for integrating new technologies and optimizing existing systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices, and validate that the delivered solutions meet these specifications. You will be a key part of guiding the organization through industry evolution, providing technical leadership, and ensuring that solutions support long-term business objectives.


Essential Functions

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with senior leadership to define the IT strategy and roadmap, ensuring alignment with business goals and objectives.
  • Architecture Design: Create and maintain detailed documentation of architectural designs, processes, and standards, and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with business stakeholders, project managers, and other IT professionals to derive technical requirements, address concerns, and ensure the technology in the solutions aligns with business needs.
  • Technology Evaluation: Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends, evaluating their potential impact on the organization's architecture and recommending adoption where beneficial.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks in architectural solutions and develop mitigation strategies to address them proactively.
  • Solution Compliance: Ensure compatibility, interoperability, stability, and usability of solutions relevant to the technical requirements and architecture.
  • Small Team Management: As a senior staff member, provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to team members.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proven experience and abilities in enterprise architecture and technical systems documentation.
  • Career experience in hands-on development of production complex, distributed systems.
  • Experience in at least one modern programming framework (.NET preferred).
  • Experience using architecture frameworks (e.g., C4, DoDAF, TOGAF, Archi) and technical documentation standards (e.g., UML, OpenAPI) to specify systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and understand new complex industries and technical domains.
  • Exceptional technical writing and presentation skills are essential to this position.
  • Ability to communicate with all stakeholders (including clients and vendors) and convey technical language in accessible terms.
  • (Desired) Experience in border security or intelligence domains.
  • (Desired) Architecture Certification such as TOGAF, AWS CSA – Professional, Zachman, Archimate, CEA, CPCA, or MS Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
  • (Desired) Knowledge of biometric technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer vision, blockchain, decentralized identifiers, and other emerging technologies.

Required Education, Certifications/ Licenses, Related Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering or equivalent IT field required. Advanced degree desired.
  • 8+ years’ experience in technical positions in software development.
  • 3+ years’ experience in software systems architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small teams.

Physical Job Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position (standing and/or seated) all the time.
  • This position requires the ability to spend all the time viewing computer monitors.

Travel Requirements

  • This position may require overnight domestic and international travel at times, expected to be less than 25% of the time.
  • Anticipated travel will be by car, air, and/or train.
