Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Art Handler (Seasonal Position) for the J Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum. This position reports to the Manager of Museum Operations.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Works closely with the operations team on the installation of exhibits and with the Registrar on the physical transport, packing and storage of artworks on loan and within the museum’s collection.
- Installs and maintains collection galleries, temporary exhibitions and art storage areas using appropriate materials, equipment and methods to display, store, pack and transport works of art and associated materials.
- Assists with installation and de-installation of artworks in galleries.
- Performs carpentry and painting tasks as needed.
- Transports and stores artworks, assuring safety and maintaining storage areas.
- Maintains neat and organized work areas.

Position Salary: $30/hour
Terms of Appointment: Temporary Staff Appointment - Hourly
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- A valid driver’s license would be required for this position; Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in studio art, museum studies, or related art field.
- At least one (1) year of art handling experience in a museum, gallery, artist studio, private collection or similar environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with art handling practices and terminology.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to carry out work required in lifting and transporting artworks.
- Must be able to stand for most of the workday.
- Some heavy lifting required.
Special Conditions:
- Clean Driving Record.
