Job Requirements / Description

Under general direction of the County Attorney, conducts prosecution in court proceedings on behalf of county and state government; advises county concerning legal rights, obligations, and privileges; performs related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
  • Makes recommendations to County Attorney regarding advisability of prosecution and related courses of action;
  • Interviews clients and witnesses to ascertain facts of case.
  • Gathers and analyzes evidence in case, reviews pertinent decisions, policies, regulations, and other legal matters pertaining to case;
  • Provides evidence to formulate prosecution. Correlates findings and prepares case.
  • Studies Constitution and examines legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuit;
  • Examines and accepts or rejects allotted number of potential jurors;
  • Presents and conducts case before judge and jury;
  • Examines and cross-examines witnesses.
  • Summarizes case to jury.
  • May act as agent to the County on various transactions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Supervision is received from the County Attorney.
  • No functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

Minimum Requirements:

  • JD Degree from an accredited law school is required.
  • Admission to the bar of the State of Iowa is required.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience in a governmental environment is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
