The pay range is $144,400.00 - $259,900.00

Database Engineering at Target is an engineering discipline that combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant database services. As a Principal Engineer in Database Engineering, you set the strategy for software development and/or infrastructure engineering at Target. You set the direction for how software and infrastructure engineering efforts will be designed, developed, and operationalized across the Enterprise. You lead and approve software and infrastructure engineering efforts to meet functional and non-functional requirements. You are a thought leader and mentor for internal and external technical talent and actively contribute to the external technical community. You are someone who has demonstrated experience building highly scalable, volume-centric platform services in Hybrid Cloud. You set the strategy and direction for database platform services to be defined and designed for the Enterprise and drive adoption across the Tech organization, and are an expert in system design, and can build new systems from the ground up. You are a system builder with excellent hands-on programming skills and can develop and operationalize the design you put forward.

About you:
- 12+ years of experience in technology development or services
- 4+ years of experience in strategic planning and setting technical direction
- Possesses a strong understanding of systems programming and control languages as required by your domain.
- Has demonstrated success in solving complex technical problems in more than one technical or functional area.
- Understands business fundamentals and how technologies can support business goals along with how to translate business vision into a technical strategy while understanding the financial implications.
- Has proven leadership capabilities, the ability to influence others, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills.
- Extensive experience in system design and building new systems.
- Understands how to translate product vision into a technical strategy.
- Proven track record in writing code which is efficient & fault-tolerant.
- Strong team player who understands concepts of teamwork and team effectiveness.
- Has excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills to convey complex technical solutions clearly to an organization.
- Has excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Experience in Java/J2EE, SQL/no-SQL databases, Python, Chef, Kubernetes containers, Cloud tech, etc.
- Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Java, Python.
This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team, and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
