Job Description - Radiological Program Subject Matter Expert (21954)

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Radiological Program Subject Matter Expert (SME) to work in our Environment, Safety, Health and Quality department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Willow Creek Facility in Idaho Falls with every other Friday off.

You will report to the Director of Radiological Controls and Emergency Management. You will perform analyses and impact evaluations in design, research, training, and monitoring programs to protect plant and laboratory personnel from radiation hazards. Participate in the design, maintenance, and enhancement of ongoing radiation monitoring programs. Conduct investigations, inspections, surveys, and tests to ensure compliance with government regulations and organizational requirements for personal radiation exposure, radioactive effluent releases, and radioactive concentrations in laboratory systems and the environment. Interpret test results and perform internal and external dosimetry exposure investigations.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform oversight and technical input, regulatory impact reviews, technical evaluations, and other critical support activities regarding Radiation protection program implementation following the requirements of 10 CFR 835, applicable DOE Orders, and the INL Radiological Control Manual and associated INL Radiological Control procedures.
  • Identify deficiencies, develop appropriate corrective actions, provide technical guidance for the development of radiological control policies and procedures, review new regulatory requirements for applicability, and review research and operations projects and programs for compliance with radiological control requirements.
  • Use defined technical knowledge in the area of expertise to build and maintain external relationships to promote laboratory programs and technologies. Provide opportunities for growth and collaborations with inter and intra-laboratory partnerships.
  • Provide subject matter expert analysis and support ranging from designing radiation-detection instrumentation to establishing technical basis for laboratory radiation protection standards. Be the Principal Investigator and Principal Researcher to direct research, development, demonstration, and deployment activities that may involve multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Evaluate and provide selected options for program implementation within the framework of DOE and INL requirements to include being the primary author for any associated technical reports (e.g., formal briefings to senior management).
  • Develop and assist training programs for future health physicists, radiological engineers, and radiological technicians.
  • Create ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Prepare materials for scientific and technical products, reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers. Author technical reports to include formal briefings to senior leadership and program sponsors.
  • May participate in National or International standards setting institutions.
  • May be responsible for the DOELAP accredited program and associated documentation. Related responsibilities include reviewing, approving, uploading external dosimetry data, and performing vendor audits. Provide oversight and review of external dosimetry procedures to assure correct implementation of proper practices across the Site.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, science, or related degree with 9 years of relevant experience or Advanced degree and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with a variety of Radiological Engineering software programs.
  • Obtain and maintain associated SQA and V&V related qualifications.
  • Within one year obtain DOE Radiological Worker – I or II Qualification.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Desired Knowledge or Certifications:

  • Advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, science, or related degree and either NRRPT certification or Advanced degree in health physics or ABHP Exam Part 1.
  • NRRPT
  • Certified Health Physics (CHP) through American Board of Health Physics (ABHP).

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is $109,260 - $223,908. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
