Job Title: Behavior Specialist
Reports to: Executive Director for Special Populations
Dept.: Special Populations
Exemption Status: Exempt
Pay Grade : Teacher Payscale
Work Calendar: 187 days
Primary Purpose:
Provide training and support to campus staff in the application and implementation of positive behavior supports and principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Collaborate with educators in the development and implementation of programs to remediate behavioral and social problems and assist with development and implementation behavior intervention plans.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited university
  • Masters Degree in Education/Special Education or a field that specializes in Behavior Disorders/Autism Spectrum Disorders preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • 3 successful years of teaching, preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Display professionalism in dealing with students, campus staff, and parents
  • Understanding of behavior disorders (ED/BD, ASD, etc.)
  • Has developed and implemented data collection systems
  • Experience developing and writing Functional Behavior Assessments
  • Experience with development and implementation of behavior intervention plans
  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of applied behavior analysis (preferred)
  • Self-starter and able to work without day to day supervision
Experience:
  • 3 or more years of experience working with students diagnosed with behavior disorders (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Model core organization beliefs and values; communicate openly and effectively within and across teams to maximize success.
  • Consult with teachers and administrators to design and implement instructional and behavioral supports for students in special educations including observations, data collection, recommendations, teacher training and follow up services to support the fidelity of implementation of interventions.
  • Model research proven techniques to staff in order to facilitate positive behavior change in special education settings and/or with special education students.
  • Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBA) including records review, classroom observations, interviews, and data collection.
  • Create written reports documenting the results of the functional behavior assessment and review results with IEP committee.
  • Collaborate and facilitate the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans for students in special education.
  • Analyze data and make changes to behavior intervention plans as required.
  • Design data sheets and use data collection methods that are minimally intrusive on teacher's time and effort as much as practicable.
  • Provide district wide in-service training for all stakeholders regarding the implementation of evidence - based practices.
  • Communicate recommendations for programs or individual students with the special education director, special education coordinators, and/or Lead Behavior Specialist.
  • Participate in ARD committee meetings and staff meeting.
  • Serve and/or attend committees, job-related meetings and activities as specified.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule and local board policy in the areas of assessment, placement, and planning for special education.

Working Conditions:
The job requires the ability to participate in physical crisis intervention while working with students on campus. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations is required.

  • Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

  • Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

  • Frequent district-wide travel; occasional statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours
