Our performing art center was built in 1911 as part of St. Alphonsus in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, as a place for the spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth of parishioners and the community. The Center has multiple performance and event spaces, including our 985-seat proscenium, Historic Main Stage Theatre.

Job Description:
The Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture is seeking a personable and experienced Event Bartender to join our 2024-2025 Bartender Roster. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for hospitality and an understanding of the important role that thoughtful service plays in our mission to foster a vibrant cultural and intellectual community.
Responsibilities:
  • Bartending Services: Prepare and serve a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages quickly and accurately, ensuring all drinks meet the highest quality standards.
  • Customer Interaction: Provide warm and attentive service to all guests, engaging in a friendly and professional manner to enhance the event experience.
  • Setup & Teardown: Assist with the setup and breakdown of the bar area before and after events, ensuring all supplies are stocked, and equipment is clean and properly stored.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws regarding the sale and service of alcohol, including checking identification and refusing service to intoxicated guests.
  • Cash Handling: Accurately manage cash and credit card transactions, maintain an organized cash drawer, and provide detailed reports at the end of each shift.
  • Safety & Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and organized bar area throughout the event, including washing glassware, wiping down surfaces, and managing waste disposal.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with event coordinators, other staff members, and volunteers to ensure smooth service and a seamless guest experience.
Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of bartending experience, preferably in an event or hospitality setting.
  • Certification: Must hold a valid BASSET or other relevant alcohol service certification.
  • Skills: Excellent customer service and communication skills; ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment; strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with a wide variety of cocktails, wines, and beers; knowledge of beverage trends and ability to suggest pairings.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 lbs, and perform tasks that involve repetitive motion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in a cultural or non-profit setting.
  • A passion for the arts, culture, and community engagement.

Work Environment:
This role involves working during events, which may include evenings and weekends. The Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture is a historic venue, and the ability to work in a dynamic and sometimes fast-paced environment is essential.
Compensation:
Hourly rate based on experience, plus tips.
